More evacuations in Southern California wildfires
According to the Associated Press, authorities have issued new mandatory evacuations to residents in parts of San Diego County. About 3,800 households have been told to evacuate in Wildcat Canyon and Multh Valley, where the Witch Fire is burning, and are being sent to Santana High School.
President Bush has declared a state of emergency in Southern California and ordered federal aid to the region.
The following is a list of wildfires burning in Southern California, by county:
" Buckweed Fire: 35,547 acres south of Agua Dulce in northeastern Los Angeles County; 20 percent contained. About 15,000 people and 5,500 homes evacuated. Fifteen homes, 17 outbuildings, 40 vehicles destroyed. Four people injured.
" Canyon Fire: 3,800 acres in coastal community of Malibu; 10 percent contained. About 1,500 people evacuated. Six homes, two businesses and a church destroyed. Nine other homes, five commercial buildings damaged. Four injuries reported.
" Magic Fire: 1,200 acres in northern Los Angeles County in Stevenson Ranch; 20 percent contained.
Orange County
" Santiago Fire: 15,000 acres east of Irvine; 30 percent contained. Two outbuildings damaged, one destroyed. Four minor injuries to firefighters.
San Bernardino County
" Slide Fire: More than 1,500 acres in Green Valley Lake area of the San Bernardino Mountains, east of Lake Arrowhead. At least 30 homes destroyed and several communities evacuated.
" Grass Valley Fire: More than 300 acres in Grass Valley area northwest of Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino Mountains. At least 138 homes destroyed and several communities evacuated. No containment.
San Diego County
" Witch Fire: About 145,000 acres burned in northern San Diego County between Witch Creek and Rancho Bernardo. No containment; 500 homes, 100 businesses, 50 outbuildings destroyed. 375 other structures damaged, including 250 homes and 75 businesses. One civilian and seven firefighters injured.
" Harris Fire: 22,000 acres about 70 miles southeast of San Diego north of the border town of Tecate. Five percent contained. Several homes and other structures destroyed. One civilian killed, 16 people and five firefighters injured.
"Rice Fire: At least 1,500 acres burned in Fallbrook in northeastern San Diego County. No containment. Some 45,000 people evacuated; 50 homes and businesses destroyed, 30 others damaged.
Santa Barbara County:
" Sedgewick Fire: 710 acres near Los Olivos. Fully contained. No evacuations. No homes destroyed and no reports of injuries.
Ventura County:
" Ranch Fire: 41,000 acres near Piru; 10 percent contained. About 200 people evacuated. Three homes and four outbuildings destroyed. No injuries reported.
