CHS honor society is out for blood - yours

CHS culinary arts students, under the supervision of educator and dynamo Penny Reynolds, have started this year with a bang. They worked with UNR in hosting the Nevada Grows event at the Governor's Mansion, where they prepared and served 500 people with products grown in Nevada.

They have catered many events held at CHS including the OCEA Retirement Fair, the CHS varsity football senior dinner and a lunch for the "Your Future is So Bright Day" presenters.

They also had a panel speaking to freshmen and a booth at the career fair. The seniors have become active members in the Reno Tahoe International Food Service Executive Association (IFSEA) and are looking forward to taking their first certification tests.

Regular lunch service in the restaurant will be starting in December. Reservations are required and the menus will be listed on our link on the CHS Web site. Dec. 18 is the Northern Nevada Pro Start Competition. CHS will be hosting schools from Douglas, Lyon, Churchill and Washoe counties. The winners will proceed to the state competition in Las Vegas in February. This event is open to the public, starting at 2 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria.

The CHS environmental club, under the student leadership of President Darcy Morris and Vice President Michael Dana and faculty advisors Cheryl Macy and Adam Whatley, kicked off its year with a strong membership of about 30 students. The club's first project was to assist Muscle Powered and NDOT with the October bike rodeo.

As they do every year, the environmental club is handling the logistics of the school's recycling program. The club's focus this year will be awareness, specifically awareness regarding energy efficiency. The students also plan on organizing a "leave-your-car-at-home day" in the spring and organizing a low-impact consumption month for January.

C-Unity members, under the leadership of advisor Sarah Piggott, have been meeting Mondays at lunch preparing for the upcoming events. C-Unity will be at the craft fair selling spirit items and taking pictures of the senator man and children on Nov. 17. All staff members will receive a nomination form to fill out for an outstanding student to be awarded at the C-Unity reception on Dec. 5. Forms will be distributed the week of Nov. 30. Everyone is encouraged to come to the reception and meet the wonderful families of Carson High School.

This is a great way for students to be celebrated and recognized for different aspects of student life at CHS.

Mark your calendars for Nov. 14 as the CHS National Honor Society will be hosting a blood drive in the library. NHS is trying to repeat their title as the top Northern Nevada high school for most viable units of blood donated. Save a life, call Angila Golik to make an appointment to donate blood. 283-1737.

We would also like to give special recognition to the Girls Varsity Volleyball team as they go to regional competition at 6:30 Friday at Galena, the boys and girls cross country teams as they go to regionals at Ranch San Rafael on Saturday. The girls are at 3:40 p.m. and boys start at 5 p.m. Be looking for the times to be posted soon regarding the boys and girls soccer teams as they go to regionals this weekend.
