Lyon County Babe Ruth baseball holds fall sign-ups

Lyon County boys and girls between the ages 12-15 can sign up for fall baseball by calling Korey Farnworth at 450-9124.

The cost is $40 per player. Players get to keep their jersey and hat.

Practice starts first week of September. Games run through the end of October. The Dayton team will be playing teams from Carson City, Reno, South Lake Tahoe and Gardnerville.

Dance lessons offered twice a month

A dance for ages 16 and older, featuring local performers Don and Nadine, will be the first and third Fridays of each month at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Dance lessons will be 8-8:30 p.m. and the dance will go until 10 p.m. Fox-trot, waltz, swing, Latin, country line dance and polka steps will be taught.

Cost is $5 per person, with potluck desserts for the first Friday. The third Friday is a cost of $10 per person with bottled water and snacks provided. Call Denise at 246-6227.

Donation drive for library set

A donation drive for the Listening Library at the Dayton Valley Branch Library will be from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.

The emphasis is mainly on all forms of classical music and music theater.

Donations can be monetary or in the form of compact discs or DVDs that feature classical (instrumental and vocal), opera, ballet, jazz, big band, musical theater and Native American music.

An estate CD collection of 90 works has already been donated but many more are needed to satisfy the diverse tastes of Dayton residents.

The Cultural and Performing Arts Committee for the Dayton area in cooperation with the Lyon County Library System has initiated a pilot program to create a classical music collection of CDs and DVDs at the Dayton Valley Branch Library.

Rockhound Rendezvous begins Sept. 20

Attention rock hounds: McDermitt, Nev., the site of some of the world's most exciting mineral formations, is preparing to host the fourth annual "Rockhound Rendezvous."

The McDermitt Rock & Gem Show is scheduled for Sept. 20-23, at the McDermitt Community Hall and in the parking lot in front of the Diamond A Motel, which is located on U.S. Highway 95 in McDermitt.

Highlanders to perform at Piper's

The Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band will kickoff its "Back To Scotland" fundraising tour with a concert at Virginia City's Piper's Opera House at 2 p.m. Saturday

Also appearing are the Sierra Highlanders Dancers and Tinker's Dam. The latter is a ceilidh, or Celtic party band made up of members of the Sierra Highlanders playing a wide variety of instruments including guitar, tin whistle, and bodhran, the traditional drum of Ireland.

This will be the Sierra Highlanders' fourth appearance at the historic venue.

The Sierra Highlanders Pipe Band is launching an effort to return to Glasgow, Scotland, to compete in the 2008 Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association's World Pipe Band Championship. The band placed 12th last year in the competition.

Part of the proceeds from the sale of tickets will benefit Piper's Opera House, which is operated by a nonprofit foundation restoring the building.

Camels are back on the Comstock

Camels, ostriches and emus will be racing again in Virginia City as the historic mining town presents the International Camel Races, today through Sunday in Virginia City.

General Admission is $10; VIP tickets are $35; Family Pack is $25; juniors, seniors, military $8.

Friday will feature the Media Races, where members of local media will race against one another for bragging rights and fun. Gates open at 1 p.m. and races begin at 1:30 p.m. all three days.

Friday evening folks can get dressed up in their best for the Camel Hump Ball and silent auction at the new Long Branch Saloon on North C Street. Proceeds benefit the Eagle Valley Children's Home.

On Saturday, the festivities will begin at noon with the Grand Parade down C Street, featuring the camels, many floats and marchers, hot rods, llamas, and the Equestrian Teams.
