Hearing the blues as winter approaches

Labor Day is behind us as we move toward cooler mornings (though the afternoons are still blazing) and a change in season.

While I'm really not a winter person, I find myself looking forward to winter and hoping, since we get the blowing cold anyway, that this year will bring enough snow to keep me concerned about driving in it.

Anyhow ...

I attended a party Saturday night which included music by The Lincoln Highway, a four-piece blues band comprised of local musicians.

It had been a while since I'd listened to a blues band live since, it seems, the only crowd still believing blues to be relevant (judging by the usual venues, at least) would be the biker set. Their taste in music is not lacking!

The Lincoln Highway is playing Saturday night at Dayton Inn, if any of the rest of you have been missing blues live. They can also be contacted to play your private party, by calling Nick Tolotti at 356-3520.

A busy guy, Tolotti is also the head of Citizen's for Affordable Homes' weatherization program, which recently expanded into Washoe County. The program includes an array of things that can be done to your home so that it is more energy efficient. Weatherization continues to serve Lyon, Carson, Storey and Douglas counties. Tolotti, Margaret Donnelly and Toni VanCleave are knowledgeable and can answer any questions. It is well worth looking into, and as energy costs rise, is a good investment. In other news:

The Dayton Democrats meet Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Dayton Valley Golf Course. The main topic will be Dayton Valley Days, Sept. 15-16. Volunteers to man the booth are needed (two hour time slots from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.) both days. Proactive Parents of Dayton, "P-PODS" meets 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Bouncers on Deer Run Road. This is a support group for families of special needs children. Children are welcome to attend. For more information, call Glenna at 246-8028.

Also, if you've driven by the CAHI building on Pinecone, you'll notice a For Rent sign posted. That's right, CAHI moves to 625 Fairview (and Roop Street) in Carson very soon.

Presently, The Pinecone property is available for rent and allows large animals. CAHI CEO Ron Trunk has said they are discussing the possibility of using the property as a transitional home for troubled youth, since the facility is quite large and would be well designed for such an application. Personally, I think a women's shelter is needed. Any ideas?

School's back in! Please observe speed limits along Highway 50 as it has become exceedingly difficult to get onto the road from various points. It's very challenging and unsafe when folks are blazing through the 45 mph zone at 60 or better. I guess many are reading challenged!
