Las Vegas police shoot, kill armed robbery suspect

LAS VEGAS (AP) " A Las Vegas police officer shot and killed a bank robbery suspect after the man brandished a handgun while running from a getaway vehicle, authorities said.

The man, whose name was not immediately made public, died in the 6 p.m. Wednesday shooting several blocks east of downtown Las Vegas, Deputy Chief Ted Moody said.

He was identified as the man who displayed a gun while robbing a credit union about 20 minutes earlier in southeast Las Vegas.

Moody said a patrol officer shot and killed the man while chasing him on foot after he jumped from the red Dodge Charger and brandished a gun.

Police did not say how many shots were fired. Moody said he didn't believe the suspect shot at the officer.

A woman who remained in the car was taken into custody for questioning. Moody said it was not immediately clear if she would be charged in the robbery. Her name was not released.

Moody it did not appear that anyone was hurt during the robbery. He said a man wielded a gun while demanding cash, and fled to a waiting car.

The death was the ninth this year in 10 shootings involving in Las Vegas police. In 2006, police were involved in at least 25 shootings, including nine fatal.

The officer in Wednesday's slaying was placed on paid leave pending an investigation, and his name was being withheld for 48 hours per department policy.
