'Wig' out with new blue crew

Jesse Mireles, Dalia Pena and Samantha Lucas were nominated to the People to People Student Ambassador Program this summer. The three CHS students traveled to Austria, Italy, Switzerland, and France. Founded in 1956 by President Eisenhower as part of the U.S. State Department, People to People is an effort to bring citizens together and work toward world peace. The students' travels lasted 20 days. Among the many things they saw and did, Pena recalls meeting the Duchess of Austria as one of the highlights of the trip.

Adrian Garbiel's oceanography class is getting its dive certification. The class is looking for help with lab fees, which are $200 for certification and cost of equipment (i.e. mask, snorkel, fins). Garbiel says that any used equipment would help or if there is anyone willing to donate money to help defer costs. There are many students in need. They are selling magazine subscriptions and candy. As we approach the anniversary of the largest terrorist attack in the United States, CHS students will pause to remember the events of 9/11. The Student Council is buying every student a red, white and blue bracelet to show that we will "never forget." A moment of silence will be observed that morning as well.

Other news from Student Council, the first meeting of Club Council will be on Tuesday at lunch in the leadership room. A representative from each CHS club is requested to attend.

Homecoming week is Sept. 24-29 at CHS. In an effort to get more of the students represented and involved in the spirit of the week, changes are being made. In addition to our homecoming king and queen from the senior class, there will be a prince and princess from the junior, sophomore and freshmen classes, as well.

There will also be an opportunity for the community to join the Homecoming festivities. A parade is planned for Sept. 26 on Saliman Road from Robinson Street to St. Paul's Lutheran Church at 7 p.m., followed by a bonfire at the high school. Sept. 28 is blue and white day in Carson City and we hope everyone will show their Senator Pride by wearing the colors, and displaying blue and white on your car, home or business. There will be many athletic events that week to support also. See next week's column for a listing of those events.

Be part of something new, something powerful, something blue! Calling all students who want to join the first-ever spirit group at Carson High School; called the Blue Crew. It is the newest addition to C-Unity and is open to students who want to get decked out in blue wigs and make some noise. Blue Crew was founded by Nash to increase spirit throughout the school. The core team of Blue Crew members includes Bryan Byrne, Gus DeBacco and Zack Rispin. Go Senators! Caution: We cheer loud and proud.

Home varsity athletic events this week include girls' tennis versus North Tahoe on Tuesday. Cross country versus Wooster on Wednesday. Boys' tennis versus North Valleys and girls' volleyball versus Douglas on Thursday. Boys' and girls' soccer versus South Lake Tahoe on Saturday.

One final reminder for parents; Wednesday is open house at CHS beginning at 6 p.m. Come check out our wonderful school and the great teachers.
