Carson High freshman Richard Shroy made a spirited effort to hold off North Valleys' Rene Rangel, but in the end Rangel was able to overtake Shroy in a battle of two of the Northern 4A's top runners in a cross country meet on Wednesday.

Shroy led Rangel throughout the 3.1-mile race over a hilly, sandy course at Washoe Lake State Park. Shroy still had the lead going into the final 50 meters, which were run through water, but in the end Rangel, the reigning NIAA 4A State champion in the 1,600 meters, just had too much of a finishing kick.

It was an outstanding race by both runners as Rangel finished in 17 minutes even and Shroy finished in 17:05. Carson's boys and girls had an outstanding effort overall as the Senators swept the meets against North Valleys and Wooster.

In the boys meet, North Valleys didn't have a complete team and Carson beat Wooster 19-67. In the girls meet, Carson beat North Valleys 20-44 and Wooster 15-60.

Carson's JV boys and girls also won as North Valleys and Wooster didn't have complete teams.

For Carson's boys, Wade Smith was fourth overall in 17:46, Caleb Carter was fifth in 17:55, Nick Schlager was seventh in 18:06, Logan Philippi was eighth in 18:21 and Ethan Graber had the ninth best overall time in 18:23.

Freshman Evan Richards also had a solid effort, finishing in 19:31.

Sierra Lutheran's Tyler Love, whose finish didn't count in the boys team standings, took third overall in 17:28.

For Carson's girls, Yvonne Hollett won in 20:34, Jenny Mital was second in 20:47, Christy Works was third in 21;27, Amanda Gordon, coming off a severe blister, was sixth in 22;43, Gloria Sosa was eighth in 23:03 and Kat Vonrumpf was ninth in 23:09. Kristin Dockery also had a solid effort, finishing in 24:10.

The meet was a tuneup for Saturday's Nevada Union (Calif.) meet in which top teams from California will compete. Northern 4A powers Reno High and Galena will also be at the meet.
