'Don Juan' and Ray Bradbury hit Carson High

Last year, Carson High School went through the enormous task of the six-year Northwest Accreditation process. During this process, staff, students and community members identified the strengths and weaknesses of our school and outlined goals for the next five years.

One of the goals identified in this process is to "accelerate and enhance student's academic and career preparation."

"Your Future's So Bright Day" will be the first project toward meeting this accreditation goal and will be held on October 17. There are a variety of activities planned for this day including presentations by business and industry members representing sixteen "career cluster" areas.

Many English classes at Carson High School are participating in the Northern Nevada Big Read of Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451." This is a project organized by local libraries, including the Carson City Library, in which adults and teenagers are encouraged to participate in the biggest book club in Northern Nevada. The Big Read Project highlights the value and joy of reading and simultaneously provides a shared experience, a common ground for dialogue or engagement through fine literature and provides parents with a great opportunity to get directly involved with their students. "Fahrenheit 451," a compelling classic about a book-burning society, confronts the reader with the themes of thought control, individuality, and human relationships. "Fahrenheit 451" is available for checkout at the public library. Get a copy and ignite your brain.

Motivational Speaker Juan Carreon will be at Carson High School on Friday to speak to the entire student body. Juan, also known as "Don Juan," uses his Tex-Mex rapping style and real-life talks to educate and inspire teens to make positive and healthy decisions.

In his presentation, he shares personal stories about his experiences in gangs, life without a father, drugs, alcohol, teen pregnancy, suicidal behavior, and child abuse. He ultimately shows how he put his street life aside to become a positive role model in his and other communities.

The Carson wrestling team is holding a golf tournament to raise funds for the program. It will be held September 23 at Eagle Valley East Golf Course with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
