Carson City

Wood cutting permits on sale now

Permits will go on sale today for the Nevada Division of State Park's annual wood sale.

The sale starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Carson City State Library and Archives, 100 N. Stewart St. Permits are $45, cash or check only, per cord and are limited to one cord per address or family.

Amount of wood is limited. About 100 cords/permits are available first-come, first-serve. A mixture of pine and fir, some seasoned and some green, will be scheduled for pickup at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park at Spooner Lake between Sept. 22 and Sept. 28 and again Oct. 5 through Oct. 9.

Auditions today for Cabaret Kids

Wild Horse Theater is holding auditions for Cabaret Kids beginning at noon today at the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The group is looking for any kind of talent - skits, routines, songs, dances, monologues, stand-up comedy, or kids who play musical instruments. Cabaret Kids will perform the second Friday of every month in a cabaret-style review at Comma Coffee.

Those who are selected must prepare on their own and will perform for an audience at the Cabaret. To schedule an audition time, call 887-0438.

Job's Peak hike starts early today

Join the annual Job's Peak Hike with Unity Church of Today departing from the Carson Valley Swim Center at 8:30 a.m. today. The hike requires a moderate degree of endurance and fitness. Bring layered clothing, windbreaker, hat, hiking boots or sturdy shoes, sack lunch, water, sunscreen, and camera.

Cooperative Extension hosts 4-H orientation night

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension is inviting all interested Douglas County youth and their families to find out more about 4-H and sign up for clubs and activities at the Douglas County 4-H orientation night for families, 7 p.m. Monday, at the Carson Valley Methodist Church, 1375 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville. The orientation is for all new and returning 4-H members, parents and leaders. This is the night when all 4-H members will sign up for their projects, and order their 4-H T-shirts. Arrive early, as space is limited in many of the clubs.

Participants will receive 4-H project calendars and information on all of the available 4-H projects and clubs, including member guidelines and age requirements.

Some of the clubs and projects include cooking; crafts; sewing; livestock; dogs; horses; rabbits; scrapbooking; guinea pigs; science; poultry; community service; public speaking; shooting sports; reptiles and amphibians; Teen Institute; and a new project just for those ages 8 and younger - 4-H Cloverbuds. A special highlight of the evening will be a presentation by speaker, Jeff Goodwin, of the Colorado 4-H Program.
