Carson cross country shines at Grass Valley

The Carson High boys and girls cross country teams had a banner day at the Nevada Union meet in Grass Valley, Calif.

Carson's girls won the meet, beating out Reno High, giving the Senators their first win over Reno in a meet in several years. Carson's boys also had an outstanding day as they finished fourth in a meet that featured many top teams from California.

In addition, Carson's junior varsity boys won the meet and Haley Ward was the individual champion in the JV girls race.

Carson coach Pete Sinnott said his girls showed a lot a grit in winning the event.

"They beat a lot of good teams," Sinnott said.

The Senators won the meet with 54 points while another outstanding team, Granite Bay, Calif., took second with 67. Reno was third with 75. It was a turnaround for the Senators who finished behind Reno at last week's Reed Invitational.

Despite falling down, Yvonne Hollett finished third, covering the 3-mile course in 20 minutes, 14 seconds. "She ran a great race," Sinnott said. "She looks really good."

Jenny Mital also lowered her time by two minutes from last year's meet, taking seventh in 20:45.

Christy Works was eighth in 20:49, Gloria Sosa was 15th in 21:16, Katarina Vonrumpf was 22nd in 21:49, Amanda Gordon, still recovering for a serious blister on her foot, was 27th in 22:09 and Kristin Dockery finished in 23:46.

Galena edged Woodcreek, Calif., for the title in the boys race 53-54. That was a reverse of the finish in Reno's Twilight Meet in which Woodcreek won and Galena took second. Sheldon, Calif., was third with 86 points and Carson was fourth with 88.

Reno's boys took sixth, but Sinnott said the Huskies weren't at full strength and that he still considers Galena and Reno the top two Northern 4A teams.

But the Senators gained two minutes on Galena from the Reed meet.

Carson also lowered its team time by about four minutes from last year's meet as many of the Senators lowered their times by about a minute.

Richard Shroy finished fifth at 16:32 and Nick Schlager had an outstanding race, taking 12th in 17:16. Caleb Carter finished in 17:22, Wade Smith finished in 17:42, Zack Mapes finished in 18:14, Logan Philippi finished in 18:20 and Brent Moyle finished in 19:03.

For the CHS JV boys, Evan Richards was fifth in 19:01, David McMasters was sixth in 19:11, Tyler Davies finished in 20:07, Brandon Bournacorsi finished in 20:31, Andrew Richards finished in 21:04, Jonathan Lanuza finished in 21:48, Noel Lopez finished in 22:45, Josiah Toral finished in 24:02 and Brandon O'Keefe finished in 24:30.

For the CHS girls, which took third overall, Ward had an outstanding race, finishing in 22:01. "Probably the best race of her life," Sinnott said.

Libby Rheault finished in 24:30, Courtney Thompson finished in 27:51, Sarah Reiter finished in 28:39 and Mallory Downs finished in 29:03 for the CHS JV girls.
