MINDEN - Additional tests will be needed to determine the cause of death of an 8-year-old boy who died after collapsing during a flag football practice.

Officials said an autopsy on Tuesday did not pinpoint a cause of death for Britt Nicholas Mattinson, who collapsed while practicing with a Douglas County Parks and Recreation flag football team on Saturday.

The Minden Elementary School third-grader was taken by ambulance to Minden Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheriff's Capt. Mike Biaggini said further tests will be conducted, but determining a cause could take up to three months.

"We're in a holding pattern, waiting for microscopic and pathological work to see if it will show a cause of death or be inconclusive," Biaggini said.
