Carson City

Areas of Fifth Street and Butti Way are closed all weekend

Areas of Fifth Street (State Route 513) and Butti Way in Carson City will be closed from 7 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday for roadwork.

Fifth Street will be closed between Fairview Drive (previously North Edmonds Drive) and the Nevada State Prison. Butti Way will be closed between Fifth Street and Airport Road.

Traffic wishing to travel Fifth Street between Saliman Road and Fairview Drive can reach Fairview Drive where it intersects Saliman Road. Butti Way traffic can exit by traveling east on Butti Way to Fairview Drive.

Access for local businesses will be available. The work includes paving and installation of a new storm drain.

Learn the Hustle today at BAC

The High Sierra Swing Dance Club will have its monthly dance 7-10:30 p.m. today in the Brewery Arts Center Ballroom. There will be a Hustle dance lesson from 7-8 p.m. The dance lesson is $7 per person. The dance is $10.

Join in cleanup for National Public Lands Day

Celebrate National Public Lands Day 2007 today. Meet at the Bureau of Land Management-Carson City Field Office west parking for Carson River Cleanup 8 a.m.-2 p.m. to help clean up the banks of the Carson River and Silver Saddle Ranch and Prison Hill Recreation Area.

The BLM office at 5665 Morgan Mill Road at Deer Run Road. Wear long pants, heavy shoes or boots, a hat, heavy gloves, and sunglasses. Barbecue lunch will be provided. Call 885-6107.

Agencies offering Homeless Connect

Carson City Health & Human Services is organizing the 2nd Annual Homeless Connect from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. today, in collaboration with other service agencies to reach out to members of the community who are experiencing a level of poverty and/or homeless issues.

Haircuts, shower facilities, immunizations for children and adults and employment opportunities will be available. Participants will also be able to meet with Judge John Tatro to discuss legal issues that may be preventing them from moving forward.

Blankets, toiletries (hygiene kits), entertainment and food are being donated by local businesses. There will be activities for the children and a special guest for their enjoyment.

The event is being held at FISH, located at 900 E. Long Street.

Reno

Student art on exhibit at gallery

Sierra Arts and the City of Reno present a exhibition of artwork created by students from Turning Point - O'Brien and Turning Point - Alice Smith schools through Oct. 26, with an artists reception from 3-5 p.m. Thursday, at McKinley Arts and Culture Center's Gallery West, 925 Riverside Drive.
