Carson girls golf takes second

The Carson High girls golf team may have played its best round of the year on one of the area's toughest courses.

And Carson needed its solid round to stay ahead of South Tahoe for second place in the Sierra League. The Senators finished with a score of 475 to take second in Tuesday's Sierra League Tournament at Reno's Rosewood Lakes.

Carson's score was one off its season best of 474, but Senator coach Terry Gingell said he was happy with the score considering the course. "I was pleased with the score," he said. "You can run up a high score on that course."

For the fifth straight week, Douglas dominated, winning with a score of 439. South Tahoe finished in third with a score of 479, the second straight week that the Vikings have finished just four strokes behind Carson. The Senators have finished second to Douglas in all five league events.

Michelle Kop shot a career best 84 to finish tied for third. Also for Carson, Lydia Peri shot an 85 to take fifth and Chelsea Keating finished under 90 for the first time in her career, shooting an 87 to take sixth.

"She played very well," said Gingell, who also said Peri had a solid round. "She's playing very well right now," Gingell also said about Keating. "I'm very pleased with her progress. She's doing a great job."

Also for Carson, Katy Cowperthwaite shot a 103 and freshman Elayna Shine fired a 116. For Douglas, Bethany Wurster was the low medalist with a 3-over-par 75 and Heathern Henderson took second with an 83.
