Literacy volunteers seeking new tutors

Carson City Literacy Volunteers will hold training sessions for new tutors from 6-9 p.m. today at the Nevada State Library and Archives, 100 N. Stewart St. All sessions must be competed for certification in the Laubach Literacy program. For information call 885-1010 or 883-6105

Reading event set for Thursday

Northern Nevada Reads, a project of The Big Read, presents the Reading Relay on Thursday. The event in which community leaders will read Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451" aloud, start to finish throughout the day.

The first reader, Washoe County Commission Chair Robert Larkin, will kick off the relay at 10 a.m. at the Washoe County Administrative Complex. The event will conclude at approximately 8:30 p.m. at the Old Assembly Chambers of the Capitol. The five Reading Relay Readers for the Carson City event are Bob Crowell, Carson City School Board member; Dr. Mary Pierczynski, superintendent of the Carson City School District; Judge John Tatro; Linda Ritter, city manager of Carson City and Michael Fischer, Nevada Department of Cultural Affairs director.

The scheduled times and locations are: 10-11:30 a.m. Washoe County Administrative Complex, 1001 E. Ninth St., Reno, Lobby area of Building A; 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sparks Marina; 1-2:30 p.m. McKinley Arts and Culture Center, 925 Riverside Drive, Reno; 2:30-3:30 p.m. Incline Village Library, 845 Alder Ave.; 7-8:30 p.m. Old Assembly Chambers, Nevada State Capitol, Carson City.

Commodity food distribution scheduled for Friday

The USDA commodity food distribution will be 9-11 a.m. Friday at the Carson City Community Center. This month's commodity foods include great northern beans, Spaghetti, apple juice, green beans, diced tomatoes, applesauce and apricots.

Any needy family in Carson City can be eligible. The household must sign the issuance sheet at the Community Center on Friday to certify their household's annual income does not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. Those income guidelines are $18,889 for a single and $25,327 for a couple. No proof of income is required, only a picture ID or drivers license. For information contact 688-2828 or 687-4680.

Tupperware sale to benefit CTRMC

The Carson Tahoe Regional Healthcare Auxiliary is holding a two-day Tupperware sale from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday. The sale will take place in the main lobby of the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. For information contact the CTRH Auxiliary Gift Shop at 445-5142.

Springfish to be reintroduced

The Duckwater Shoshone Tribe and partners will celebrate the signing of a Safe Harbor Agreement and the reintroduction of Railroad Valley Springfish into the fish's restored native habitat at 11 a.m. today at Big Warm Spring southwest of Ely.

The tribe entered into a cooperative conservation partnership with the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Nevada Fish and Wildlife Office, Nevada Department of Wildlife, Bureau of Land Management, The Nature Conservancy, and U. S. Geological Survey Biological Resources Division and has been working to recover the threatened Railroad Valley Springfish.

There are only six known populations of Railroad Valley Springfish in the world, within 30 miles of each other in Railroad Valley. Prior to reintroduction of the springfish back into its historic habitat at Big Warm Spring, the Tribe and the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service will enter into a Safe Harbor Agreement. Safe Harbor agreements guarantee that landowners will not incur any new restrictions on the use of their land if they improve, restore, maintain, or create habitat for endangered or threatened species.
