A community meeting on gang violence is being held at Eagle Valley Middle School on Thursday.
Community outreach coordinator Javier Ramirez said the meeting is part of the Carson City Community Coalition's education of the public on gang issues.
The Coalition is comprised of community members, educational organizations, churches, and city government.
The objective of the coalition is to empower the entire community to take part in solving not only the gang problem in Carson City, but also the problems of truancy, lack of education among parents, and unhealthy family and teen issues. The group meets once a month at Carson City's Health and Human Services, 900 E. Long Street.
Ramirez said to expect tips on how to spot gang membership, as well as alternatives to joining a gang for children. He said speakers from the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center's Behavioral Health unit will also be available to discuss the psychological reasons children join gangs.
The informational meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. and is expected to wrap up about 8 p.m.
