Carson City

Lecture on Virginia City scheduled

The Carson City Historical Society will present a lecture on Virginia City at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St. Bert Bedeau, District Administrator for the Comstock Historic District Commission will present "Reflections of Carson City - Virginia City: From Dead Mining Town to Live Tourist Trap." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Dayton

'Killing of Emily' at Legado

"The Killing of Emily," a play that was first performed at the Gold Hill Hotel several years ago, will be performed at the Dayton Valley Country and Golf Club at Legado at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday in the clubhouse.

The murder-mystery is $35 and includes dinner; a choice of steak, fish or pork chops, and includes dessert. Reservations are recommended. Call 246-7888, ext. 707.

Bird feeder program Saturday

The "Become a Bird Brain and Build a Bird Feeder" program will be from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Dayton State Park.

Spend some time this winter watching the antics of birds flocking to your own bird feeder. Jacque Lowery, owner of Wild Birds Unlimited in Reno will trek to Dayton to educate on how to identify wild birds and the proper foods to feed them. We will be making pinecone and plastic bottle feeders. The park will provide the materials for the bird feeders and Jacque will provide the seed. Program limited to 25 participants. Solar oven building program planned

The "Build a Solar Oven" program at Dayton State Park will be held from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 13.

A park ranger will demonstrate how to build a simple solar oven and sample a solar snack. Materials and tools provided. The class will meet in the group area pavilion.

Learn to dance at Dayton center

A dance for ages 16 and older, featuring local performers Don and Nadine, will be the first and third Fridays of each month at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike St.

Dance lessons will be 8-8:30 p.m. and the dance will go until 10 p.m. Fox-trot, waltz, swing, Latin, country line dance and polka steps will be taught.

Cost is $5 per person, with potluck desserts for the first Friday. The third Friday is a cost of $10 per person with bottled water and snacks provided. Call Denise at 246-6227.

Fallon

Fallon college to stage 'Carousel'

Western Nevada College Fallon will offer the classic American musical "Carousel" at 7 p.m. Nov. 8-10 and 15-17.

Shows will be at the Churchill County High School Theater, 1222 S. Taylor St.

Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" is the story of a small-town girl who falls in love with a carnival barker who has a bad reputation. This story of love, consequences and redemption, portrayed within the setting of a New England close-knit fishing community, explores the issues of social class and conduct.

The production team will include Mary Myers as director, Noreen Swenson as musical director, Debra Edwards as choreographer, Glen Perazzo as set designer and Scott Thompson as artistic director. Anne Hyde will wear a new hat in this year's show as the assistant director, along with two new members, Adonna Crowley as costumer and Brittney Edwards as assistant choreographer.

Tickets will go on sale at WNC Fallon on Oct. 8. Prices are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens, and $8 for children ages 12 and younger. Call 423-5186.

Fernley

Rotary Club to hold golf classic

The Rotary Club of Fernley will hold the Annual Benefit Golf Classic on Oct. 13 at The Golf Club at Fernley.

The action begins at 9 a.m. with a shot-gun start, four-person scramble.

Proceeds from the fundraiser benefits COMPASS (Community Partnership Seeking Solutions).

Registration is $65 per person or $50 for golf club members.

The entry fee includes the green fees, cart rental, range balls and lunch.

There are a number of great prizes including a donation by David Stix Jr., to cater a barbecued meal for up to 25 people.

Other prizes include travel bags, rounds of golf at various golf courses, Pizza Factory dinners, gift basket from Brims and more.

Wells Fargo Bank also has donated sponsorship of $25,000 cash prize to the first person to hit a hole in one at hole 2.

Silver Springs

Ecologist to give horse talk

Noted wildlife ecologist Craig Downer will be giving a presentation entitled "Living with Wild Horses and Other Wildlife" at 1 p.m. Saturday at the McAtee Building on Ft. Churchill Street in Silver Springs. Doors open at 12:30 p.m.

His presentation will include a slide show and ample opportunity for questions and answers.

There will be refreshments served after the program.

Quilt and Fiber Optics Show this weekend

Intricately stitched quilts will be on display during the Silver Springs Entertainment and Arts annual Quilt/Fiber Arts Show on Saturday and Sunday at the Silver Springs Senior Center's community room.

The featured judge is Carolyn Susac.

On Saturday the show will be held from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and then on Sunday, the show begins will be held from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.

There will be demonstrations and hourly prize drawings. Visitors will also have an opportunity to visit at the many vendors that will have items on sale.

SSEA is being assisted by the Golden Needle Quilt Club this year. Call 577-2588.

Founders Day events next week

The Silver Springs Chamber of Commerce will commemorate the area's birthday at the 57th annual Founders Day Celebration on Oct. 13-14.

The theme of the parade is "Honoring Our Volunteers" and includes a parade, followed by fun-filled activities at Penny Park.

The event begins with a Pancake Breakfast at 7 a.m. at the Silver Springs Senior Center, 2945 Ft. Churchill Road. All proceeds raised from the breakfast benefits the chamber.

Parade will be held at 10 a.m. beginning at the Senior Center and ending at Penny Park.

The festivities continue at Penny Park following the parade with vendors, games, live entertainment from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

On Oct. 15, Founder's Day will only consist of activities held at Penny Park from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m.

Nonprofit groups, individuals and businesses are encouraged to enter a float, decorate a bike or car.

Founder's Day will include a Junk Car Jamboree where the junk cars will be judged and prizes will be awarded. Owners are encouraged to include a story about the junk car. The chamber will arrange for disposal of unwanted junk cars.

Outhouse races held this weekend

Virginia City's World Championship Outhouse Races will be held Saturday and Sunday.

The event begins Saturday with parade through the center of town. Races begin at 1 p.m. and continue every half hour until 5:30 p.m. They run from noon-3 p.m. Sunday.

V&T Beer and Brats ride planned Oct. 13

The first V&T Railroad Beer and Brats Train ride, will be 4 p.m. Oct. 13.

The train will feature beer and brats, and will go to the new track to American Flats.

Cost is $35, which includes train ride, food and Oktoberfest music.
