Richard Shroy and Yvonne Hollett each had outstanding races to lead an excellent effort by the Carson High boys and girls cross country teams on Saturday at one of the West Coast's most prestigious events, the Stanford Invitational.
Carson's boys were 13th out of 54 teams while the CHS girls were sixth out of 48 teams.
Shroy finished 21st out of 343 runners in the boys race, covering the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes, 30 seconds. Hollett was 13th in the girls race, lowering her time by one minute from last year's event as she finished in 19:14. Jenny Mital also lowered her time by one minute from last year, finishing in 20:25.
Carson's top five boys all ran in a tight group, finishing with times between 16:30 and 17:23. "They ran awesome," Carson assistant coach Jeanne Stelzer said.
Also for the boys, Caleb Carter finished in 17:10, Nick Schlager finished in 17:16, Wade Smith finished in 17:19, Logan Philippi finished in 17:23, Zack Mapes finished in 17:41 and Ethan Graber finished in 17:56.
For the girls, Amanda Gordon finished in 20:25, Amanda Gordon finished in 20:29, Christy Works finished in 20:50, Gloria Sosa finished in 21:22, Kat Vonrumpf finished in 21:27 and Haley Ward finished in 21:43. "The girls ran really well," Stelzer said.
