Silver linings hard to find in budget crisis

We're hopeful predictions of continued economic strife will be proven unfounded locally and on a grander scale, but the likelihood is the rebound may take some time in coming. After all, local revenues are largely dependent on people spending money on goods and services, and how many people do you know who haven't cut back in those areas?

Once upon a time, in a neighborhood very much like yours, two baby girls were born. By coincidence, both little girls were named Sara. One was Sara Anne; the other was Sara Beth. Regarding Chuck Muth's diatribe on raising taxes, I hope he didn't give anyone the idea that Nevada is wildly spending their money. Take education, Nevada is 45th compared to the other states in per pupil spending, 20 percent below the national average, and if you were to compare expenditures by states, you would find that Nevada is at or near the bottom in all categories. So while Mr. Muth doesn't want his taxes raised, maybe he should come up with some ideas on how the state can properly educate our youth, and provide a decent environment for the rest of us.

Letters to the editor

Chuck Muth's column, "Nevada should profit from Yucca gold mine," on April 11 has some technical problems. First, Nevada does not have to agree to the Yucca project. Congress voted for and approved the project. The Department of Energy is not pursuing an alternative. Second, it is not necessary to heat the water in the reverse osmosis process. The water is forced through the membranes with pressure. Third, from an environmental standpoint, building a desalination plant by Yucca mountain is a bad idea. Salt water is very corrosive and has a tendency to foul pipes and pumps. Also, in the case where a pipe broke, due to an earthquake or a man made disaster, it would be unacceptable to flood the countryside with salt water. Lastly, the federal government is not in the business of providing states with water or power.

Indian casino will be a blow to Northern Nevada

As my regular readers know, I'm not a big fan of virtually unregulated American Indian and/or Internet gambling. The huge Thunder Valley tribal casino near Auburn, Calif., just off I-80 on the way to Reno represents a major economic threat to struggling casinos in the Reno/Tahoe area as Nevada gaming regulators continue to ignore that threat.

Bill overdue for legislators' term limits

There was a time back in the early 1990s when limiting the terms of state legislators seemed like a good idea. At the time, term limits were aimed at much larger game than those elected officials who will be forced to go in 2010.

Under Blackwater, our troops would finally get revenge

Someone is making a killing in Iraq, but it's not our brave soldiers. As I listened Wednesday night to investigative journalist Jeremy Scahill rattle off a litany of frightening facts associated with the growing influence of military security contractor Blackwater USA, I couldn't help but think of the dozens of members of military families who sacrifice so much while their loved ones are off fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The author of The New York Times bestseller "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army," Scahill was a featured speaker on the Henderson campus of the College of Southern Nevada.

It's time to rethink benefit plans for government employees

In the latest round of budget cuts, it was decided to take $17.5 million out of a fund that had been set aside to cover an expected $3 billion-plus "unfunded liability" Nevada taxpayers face in the state's retirement benefits account for government employees in the future. It's sort of like what the federal government does when it takes money from the Social Security trust fund for ongoing operations.

There's only toxic waste at the end of the Yucca Mtn. rainbow

Passover: A remembrance of harder times

During the third week of April, Jews will celebrate Passover, the annual remembrance of the Hebrew slaves' liberation in ancient Egypt. This celebration of freedom - observed by eight days of abstaining from eating any grain product that has been leavened, leaving Jews who observe Passover no bread, pasta and, for many, no rice or beans, either, for a little more than a week - seems odd. How do strict dietary restrictions hailing back to an ancient story of fleeing oppression without enough time for the bread to rise celebrate freedom?

Make the Bush tax cuts permanent

If someone had told me I would vote against more than $200 billion in tax increases in just my first year in Congress, I would not have believed them. While there are those of us in Congress who are dedicated to cutting spending and reducing taxes, the majority party remains undaunted in their efforts to expand government. This year's budget includes the largest tax increase in our country's history - $683 billion in tax increases. This equates to nearly $3,000 for every taxpayer in Nevada.

What are taxpayers getting for this $5,000-per-second war?

Recent calculations of the direct costs of the Iraq war are currently running around $5,000 per second which, unlike the previously used figure of umpteen billions of dollars per month, is a far more comprehensible number for the U.S. taxpayer to fathom. This includes military payroll, transportation to and from the war zone, in-country lodging, meals, active forces medical care, heavy equipment, spare parts, maintenance, fuel, weaponry, ammunition, shipping, subcontractors, etc., plus the indirect costs of long-term medical care for wounded veterans, death benefits and funeral expenses, VA and Pentagon administrative costs, interest on the Iraq war debt, etc.

What didn't happen in Carson City

Some of King's ideals are alive and well in Nevada

Last Friday, April 4, marked the 40th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. A few days ago, I viewed the archival news footage of Rev. King's life, and I realized that he was not only a great orator committed to peace and nonviolence in bringing about social change, but he was also a husband and the father of four young children, whose dream was equality for all children.
