Looks like Fazekas will make it

Some random thoughts for a Saturday morning.

• Former Nevada All-American Nick Fazekas can play in the NBA, and I would be surprised if he's not on somebody's NBA roster next season. The 6-11 Fazekas scored a career-high 18 points against Sacramento Thursday night, and he's impressed the Clippers' brass with his knowledge of the game. Fazekas has averaged seven rebounds a game, and Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy remarked that Fazekas seems to be getting better every game.

• While we're on the subject of Nevada basketball, it was nice to see ex-Nevada star Ramon Sessions make a game-winning basket the other night. It was his first game-winner in just his 10th game as a pro. Sessions, like Fazekas, is no doubt playing for increased playing time the last week of the season and for next season. Sessions' outside game really took off in the NBA's D-League, and he's developed a solid 3-point shot .

• I question Cal's decision to hire Mike Montgomery. Not because he doesn't know the game, but more because of his age and the fact he's a former Stanford coach. I say this without knowing if Nevada coach Mark Fox or Saint Mary's College Randy Bennett were actually made offers. Montgomery is in his mid-50s. I would have liked to have seen Cal go with a younger coach. Does Cal know how long Montgomery really wants to coach? Honestly, Montgomery has nothing to prove at the college level, having taken a Stanford team led by Mark Madsen to the Final Four.

• I still can't get over the decision of JaVale McGee to hire an agent and in a sense turn professional. Why not test the waters, and if for some reason you don't fare well go back to Reno? McGee has so much to learn. What he needs to do his mature, and in a hurry. The first time he gets that whiny face going in a game, you can bet a veteran player will be all over him. I know the money is tough to pass up, but there probably would have been more had he stayed at Nevada another year. I still can't believe his mother, Pam, calling him the "Big Secret" at the going-away press conference. What she needs to do is stay away and let the kid grow up; loosen the strings.

• Did you see the Carson-Hug score on Thursday? Yikes. 35-0. The school either needs to drop baseball or petition the NIAA to drop down to 2A or 1A. It's been so long since Hug has been good at baseball. There is no reason why it should get embarrassed most of the time.

• The NCAA Tournament hasn't had a lot of drama, but it was nice to see all of the top seeds make it to the finals. I admit that I only have two of my Final 4 left - UCLA and North Carolina.

My pick is UCLA over Memphis and North Carolina over Kansas.

• If you are an A's or Giants fan, something tells me you are in for a long season. Both offenses are anemic, and that's not a good thing. The Giants will probably be the worst of the two, and may be fortunate if they win 60 games.
