Milz won't try for fourth term as Lyon commissioner

Bob Milz, a three-term Lyon County Commissioner from Dayton who had been planning on running for a fourth term, has changed his mind.

"After considering running for a fourth term in the 2008 election, I have decided to retire from public office at the end of this year," he said in a statement released through Lyon County Manager Dennis Stark.

Milz, a Republican, has represented District I, comprised of portions of Dayton Valley, Mound House and Silver City, since 1996.

In February he said he would run for a fourth term, believing that the law allowed him to do that because he was elected before the term limit went into effect on Nov. 27, 1996. Milz defeated incumbent Nancy Dallas on Nov. 2, 1996.

Milz said in the statement that it is time for him to retire and do things with his family. He did not return a call seeking comment.

Filing for election begins May 5, but former Lyon County Manager Donna Kristaponis, also a Republican, has already announced her candidacy for Milz's seat. She said she was surprised at his announcement.

"I wish him the best," she said.

In addition to Milz, Commissioner LeRoy Goodman, a Fernley Republican who represents District 4 in North Lyon County, has also decided against a run.

"Twelve years is enough, as far as I'm concerned," he said in February.

Don Tibbals, a Republican from Yerington who represents District III, said earlier this year he did plan to run for a second term.

Milz said in the statement he hopes a few "good people will consider a run at the District I Commissioner seat as we have challenging times ahead throughout Lyon County."

He thanked his past supporters and the county staff.

"We have made a difference," he said in the statement.
