Group seeking new foster parents

Carson City's Foster Parent Recruitment and Support Coalition will meet today at noon in the Nevada State Library and Archives conference room.

There remains a need for more foster homes in the area and for more CASA volunteers.

CASA of Carson City currently advocates for more than 50 Carson City children in child welfare cases. There are fewer than five non-relative foster homes in Carson City.

Casa of Carson City, DCFS, The Sierra Association of Foster Families, and the Carson City School District are working together in a Coalition to assist the state.

It is harmful to send children away from their community, their school and their parents to other counties because Carson City does not have sufficient foster homes.

For more information, call CASA director Chris Bayer at 882-6776.

Mack denied new trial, again

(AP) - Darren Mack's bid for a new trial in state court ended Tuesday when a judge again denied the former Reno pawn shop owner's request to withdraw his pleas to killing his wife and shooting the judge who handled their divorce.

Mack's appeal now moves to the Nevada Supreme Court but not before Judge Douglas Herndon criticized Mack's lawyer, William Routsis, for taking an "immature approach to the practice of law."
