An array of local events to celebrate Earth Week

Western Nevada College students are offering free events, information and giveaways to remind those on campus and in the community about caring for Mother Earth.

In Carson City, Western Nevada College's new Sustainable Living Group has chosen Earth Day to offer a free film about global warming. "An Inconvenient Truth" will be shown on Tuesday at Marlette Hall in the Cedar Building, on the Carson City campus.

The film will be screened at 12:15 p.m. and 7 p.m., followed with discussions moderated by faculty members.

Students, faculty and the general public are invited to see the Academy Award-winning film narrated by former Vice President Al Gore. For details, contact Professor Ed Kingham at 445-4299.

Fallon Campus Students are celebrating Earth Day Tuesday by giving out free canvas shopping bags, planting trees and providing information on how to be more earth friendly.

There will also be a campus trash pickup contest at 2 p.m. and a chance to recycle cardboard, cans and plastic with designated bins during Earth Week, April 21-25. For information, contact the Fallon Associated Students' office at 423-7565, ext. 2264.

Carpet One Floor And Home locations throughout North America are gearing up today to clean up their communities for National Green Select Day.

Volunteers from Roger's Carpet One in Carson City will team up with Girl Scout Troop 399 to clean up two wetlands areas in Carson City.

The Fullstone Wetland, which is 38 acres, and the Steinheimer Wetlands, which is 8 acres, are owned by Carson City and are home to many species of wildlife, including the resident coyote.

Long-term plans for these area include developing a series of walking trails which will be open to the public year round, while providing valuable urban wetland habitat for migrating birds, mammals and reptiles.

This clean up event is open to all. Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. today in the parking lot of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church.
