Junior Wildcats take first, second in tourneys

The Western Nevada Wildcats 14 and under baseball team qualified for the USSSA Western World Series by taking second in its first tournament of the season in Davis, Calif.

The Wildcats were paced iby Max Keller, who had a .750 on-base percentage. Dylan Sawyers had a .706 on base percentage and Drew Moreland had a .667 on-base percentage.

Nicholas Domitrovich pitched well, going six innings in two games. Drew Moreland also pitched well, going 6.1 in two games. The Wildcats went 4-1 to take second.

Last weekend, the Wildcats won the title in a USSSA tournament in Redding, Calif., to qualify for the USSSA World Series.

The Wildcats went 4-1, beating the Golden Eagles 22-0, Klamath Falls, Ore., 5-3, losing 10-2 in the third game, but coming back to beat the Redding Vipers 7-2 before beating them again 4-3 in the championship game.

In the first game against the Golden Eagles the Wildcats sent 22 players to the plate in the first inning, scoring 17 runs. Nine different players scored in the first. Max Keller and T.J. Menning combined for a three inning no-hitter. Nick Domitrovich & Chance Quilling hit home runs. Gabe Pongasi had a double and Jace Carlson also played well for the Wildcats

The second game with Klamath Falls was more of a pitcher's duel as the two teams combined for only eight hits. Sawyers, Brock Pradere, Keller and T. J. Meinning led the Wildcats offensively. Tim Baylor went the first three plus innings, giving up one run. Domitrovich went the last three, also giving up one run.

The Wildcats needed to win the fourth game against the Vipers to advance to the championship game.

Austin Pacheco pitched a complete game, six inning victor,y giving up two runs on three hits and helped his cause with a solo home run. It was a team effort with the Wildcats playing great defense and seven different players scoring one run each.

The championship game was a rematch with the Vipers. Sawyers opened the game with a double and scored on a fielder's choice by Domitrovich, who started on the mound. Domitrovich made that one run stand until the top of the sixth when the Vipers scored twice. In the bottom of the sixth, Baylor hit a two-run homer and Chance Quilling followed with a solo shot. The Vipers scored one in the top of the seventh, but Domitrovich stranded the tying run on second, finishing a seven inning complete game performance, giving up five hits.

For the tournament, Sawyers, Pradere, Domitrovich and Quilling were each on base nine times. Quilling had two homers, while Pacheco, Domitrovich and Baylor each had one.

Domitrovich pitched 10 innings in two games, giving up four runs, two earned on five hits.
