Pride Week offers chance to clean up Carson City

Carson Pride week runs through Sunday. The city is offering these ways to help clean up the community:

Carson City Landfill

The landfill is open free to residents Friday-Sunday. No commercial loads. Recycled items for drop off, including car batteries, waste oil and antifreeze up to five gallons will be accepted. Up to four vehicle tires will be accepted.

Senior junk haul

The junk removal service 1-800-GOT-JUNK will offer for free up to three bookings of junk removal a day to elderly or disabled Carson City residents.

No hazardous material, maximum of one-fourth truckload per household, no "bedloads;" maximum of one half house of service per booking; limited to items that a two-person crew can move.

Service time is from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Call 887-8898 and follow the recorder instructions.

Wreck riddance

Pick-N-Pull will tow away any old vehicles to the salvage yard for free. The VIN number must be visible and the property owner has to sign a release. Call 887-7772.

Adopt-A-Block

Pick an area such as schools or services clubs and clean it up. Heavy-duty garbage bags are available at city hall. Fill them up and the city will haul them away. Call 887-2355 to schedule a pick up.

Recycling

Take cans, glass, newspapers, cardboard and plastic for recycling at the Carson City Landfill Recycling Center. Take any reusable items to F.I.S.H., OARC or the Salvation Army.

Household hazardous waste

Dispose of pesticides, herbicides, paints and old gasoline. Call 887-2355 for an appointment.

Street trash pick up

Carson City Street Operations will pick up any bundled yard waste in the city urban area put at curbside 8 a.m.-4 p.m. now through Thursday for free.

Only garden debris will be accepted, no furniture, appliances or lumber. No ash or burned material. Tree limbs must be in bundles no longer that 6 feet and no larger than 4 inches in diameter.

City Arbor Day celebration Friday

Carson City will have its annual Arbor Day Celebration at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Steinheimer Park, in the Northridge subdivision.

The last Friday in April has been designated as Arbor Day.

At the celebration, the Shade Tree Council will recognize Carson Dodge with the George Washington Ferris Award. George Washington Ferris was responsible for planting trees on the Capitol grounds around 1876.

Carson Dodge was selected to receive the award for its contribution to Carson City Urban Forest. The council said that Carson Dodge is the only car dealership in Carson City that has devoted time and space for the trees planted on its grounds.

Gov. Jim Gibbons issued a proclamation supporting Arbor Day in Nevada. City Supervisor Pete Livermore will read the city's proclamation supporting Arbor Day.

For the 14th straight year, the council will receive a Tree City USA Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation. Carson City is one of eight certified Tree City USA communities in Nevada.

In addition to the award presentations, a tree planting is scheduled at 6 p.m. This year, the council will plant a Bur Oak Tree. The tree was donated to the city by the Fleming Nursery in Woodburn, Ore.
