Carson golf dominates again

Led by Zack Rispin, the Carson High boys golf team continued to be on fire in another Sierra League Tournament on Tuesday.

Rispin shot a 2-under par 70 to be low score medalist as the Senators won their third straight Sierra League event on Tuesday at Wildcreek. Carson dominated the competition, shooting a 388 to easily outdistance Reno High, which was second at 425.

Reno was followed by South Tahoe (436), Douglas (444) and Damonte Ranch (452). Douglas High's Thomas Wicker finished tied for second at 76 while Carson's Sam Staub finished tied for fourth at 77 and the Senators' Ryan Livermore was sixth at 78.

Rounding out Carson's scores were Isaac Holt at 81, Jonathan Singer at 82 and Jordan Rogers at 86.

"They played really well," Carson coach Rod Butler said. "We did what we needed to. Wildcreek usually plays tough."

But Butler said the key was his players kept the ball in play. Holt and Singer shot scores a little higher than they usually do, but Butler said they also played well if not for a couple of bad holes.

"They just made a couple of mistakes," Butler said. "Other than that they played consistent and well.

"It's just a matter of guys being consistent. We have six guys that are all capable of posting that low score. That just makes a huge difference and our bad scores aren't that bad."

Rispin had two birdie putts on the last two holes to shoot a 69, but settled for par on both holes. After missing a birdie putt on his final hole, Rispin came back to save par with a four-foot putt to shoot his 70.

Carson hosts its invitational today and Thursday and the state's top two teams in Spanish Springs and the Senators will be featured.

Spanish Springs is the defending NIAA 4A State champion while Carson is the defending state runner-up. "That will be a good test," Butler said. "They're a consistently under 400 team."

Many of the Northern 4A teams will be in the event along with several California teams, including Grass Valley's Nevada Union. A total of 17 teams will be in the tournament.

The event begins at 1 p.m. today at Silver Oak and will move over to Eagle Valley West on Thursday, beginning at 8 a.m.
