SACRAMENTO " A man who was shot to death by a Sacramento County sheriff's deputy is suspected of robbing and murdering a 76-year-old man and setting his house ablaze.

Sheriff John McGinnis says 39-year-old David Kenneth Hamilton and his neighbor, 41-year-old Daniel Norman, hatched the plan. McGinnis says they then torched the house in the Sacramento suburb of Foothills Farms and fled.

Detectives tracked Hamilton to a Roseville motel late Sunday. He was fatally shot while reaching into his waistband, although McGinnis says Hamilton was later found to be unarmed.

Norman is jailed on suspicion of murdering Wilbur Reynolds. Authorities believe Reynolds had rented a room to Hamilton.
