It may have been a horrible day, but many of the members of the Carson High boys and girls track teams turned in outstanding efforts on Wednesday in a Northern 4A meet at McQueen.
The meet was a three-way affair between Carson, McQueen and Fallon. "What a miserable day that was," Carson coach Robert Maw said. The meet was held in winds 25-30 miles an hour and there was even some snow.
For the girls, Christy Works and Kayla Sanchez combined to win seven events. Sanchez has been battling illness throughout the season, so she competed in the 300 hurdles for the first time this season, winning the event in 44.8 seconds.
"Considering the conditions we're really pleased with that time," Maw said. "She ran a great race."
Sanchez also won the 100, although it was difficult to record an accurate time in the conditions. In addition, Sanchez had an outstanding season best of 16 feet, 9 inches to win the long jump.
"I really think she can jump in the high 17s or low 18s," Maw said. "It will happen I think."
Works won the 400 and 800 and also ran on the winning 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams. She ran with Laura Sosa, Gloria Sosa, Kat vonRumpf in the 4x800 and with Kendra Krupp, Kelsey Chicuarara and Gloria Sosa in the 4x400.
Carson's boys 4x400 relay team of David McMasters, Caleb Carter, Robby Barlow and Richard Shroy also won. Shroy won the boys 1,600 and Jenny Mital won the girls 1,600 as well.
Christy Tom also had an outstanding effort in setting a season best of 100-9 to win the discus. Also for the girls, Julianne King was second in the 100.
Also for Carson's boys, Caleb Carter had an outstanding jump of 20-9 considering the conditions to win the long jump and won the 400 as well. Mike Arnold, who has cleared 16-0 this season, was able to win the pole vault, clearing 14-0. The wind kept blowing the bar off at 15-0, so Arnold easily cleared 14-0 to win the event.
Carson will have nine athletes competing in the Meet of Champions on Saturday in Sacramento:
Kayla Sanchez, long jump, 100, 200, 300 hurdles; Carter, long jump, triple jump; Shroy, 3,200; Arnold, pole vault; Evan Pearson, frosh-soph triple jump, long jump; Goria Sosa, 800; Works, 400, 800; and Gloria Sosa, Works, King and Chicuarara in the 4x400 relay.
