Aldean will seek re-election

Developer/broker Shelly Aldean will run for re-election as city supervisor on a platform to redevelop downtown, build a better relationship with Douglas County and stop the spread of gangs.

Aldean, president of the Glenbrook Co. and vice president/corporate broker for Eden Managements, was appointed as supervisor in 2003 after the death of Supervisor Jon Plank.

She was elected in 2004 as Ward 2 supervisor with almost 60 percent of the vote.

There are several issues the city should work on, she said, but "getting a handle on this gang (issue) is of paramount importance," she said in an interview.

The city is dealing with a tight budget now, she said, but it still can plan for bigger projects and fund important programs.

It can develop plans for downtown, build business support for projects and pursue plans for a sales tax-sharing agreement with Douglas County, she said.

Aldean led calls to stop the city's bus service to Douglas County after the county refused to help with costs, but she said the city couldn't run the buses for free.

The relationship between Carson and Douglas is already getting better, though, she said, and it will continue to improve if the sales tax plan passes to cut down on sales tax competition.

"The current state of the economy has forced the city to operate more efficiently and search for creative ways of maximizing its resources," Aldean said in a statement. "It has, in many ways, been a valuable exercise and has helped us, as an organization, to create a template of fiscal discipline that we can use during lean and prosperous times alike."

Aldean also is a member of the Carson City Regional Transportation Commission, the Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.

Aldean is the first to announce a run for either Ward 2 or Ward 4 supervisor, both of which have elections this year. Attorney Richard Staub said he will probably seek a third term as Ward 4 supervisor, but has not formally announced.

Three men have announced they will run for mayor - Sean Lehmann, Bob Crowell and Jim Shirk. Mayor Marv Teixeira has said he will not seek a fourth term.

Candidates may begin filing for all three offices on May 5.
