Remembering the laborers on Labor Day weekend

If you want to generate puzzled expressions this weekend, ask people the true meaning of Labor Day.

Reader says euthanization of bear in Carson City was unnecessary

At about 3 p.m. on Wednesday, I was five feet away from a wild black bear. I locked eyes with this magnificent creature and for me time stopped. It was the ultimate poem unwritten and most beautiful song unsung. And in one word, WOW!

Neil Weaver: It's time for an independent investigation of airport

I am on record since the beginning of my latest appointment to the Carson City Airport Authority Board as saying that I believe the Airport Authority needs to be investigated.

Chairman: Airport is making changes necessary for future success

As a resident of Carson City for more than 32 years, this is the first time I've felt compelled to publicly respond to such an inflammatory commentary as posted by Bob Thomas (Sunday, Aug. 24).

Guy W. Farmer: A Burning Man critic decides to see the event for himself

I paid a visit to Burning Man with Appeal colleague Sam Bauman last Tuesday and finally came face-to-face with some of the people I've been tormenting in print for more than 10 years. Also, I promised my friend Sam that I wouldn't refer to the event as a "naked drug festival" this year, so I won't.

Googling your name can be a sobering experience.

There was a period of about two years when I could type my name into the Internet search engine and, mixed in with the stories or columns I'd written recently, a police blotter item from a far away newspaper would appear reporting that Barry Ginter, an employee of the National Hotel in Maine, had been arrested for a DUI.

Supports property tax cap Maybe people just don't understand the Sharron Angle Property Tax Cap. It would be so much more fair to those already in their homes for a long time and those buying new homes.

Chuck Muth: Reno's tax-happy Republican mayor

If GOP party leaders want to know why the Republican "brand" " both nationally and right here in Nevada " isn't worth the proverbial warm bucket of spit these days, they have only to look at the example being set by Reno Mayor Bob Cashell.

Hal Hansen: A crisis at home ... Why it's vital that we work together to keep kids in school

America's future is at risk. War, terrorism and the high price of oil notwithstanding, there's another threat to consider: Nationally, 30 percent of our youth drop out of high school.

Fresh ideas: Russia's aggression is felt by all former Soviet bloc countries

My late uncle's sister's granddaughter Amanda (don't even try to figure it out) age 37, a psychologist, married (but filing for divorce), mother of 4-year-old Maria, and a citizen of Latvia, panicked hearing the news about Russia invading Georgia and took the first plane she could to San Francisco. Latvia is 1,367 miles away from the crisis, so when I heard about Amanda's flight, I wondered if she had been just a bit impulsive.

It's time for some teamwork on budget cuts

If there were not so much at stake, the battles being waged in Nevada over budget cuts might be considered entertaining.

Bob Thomas: Shut down the Airport Authority and start over

As a fixed-base operator at our airport for the past 33 years, and as the father of the Carson City Airport Authority, and as a citizen of Carson City, I herewith call for the resignation of every current member of the Airport Authority.

Kirk Caraway: Obama and McCain debate " POWs for change!

Today we tune into Future News Network for a peek into the outlook for the presidential race.

Guy W. Farmer: The Democratic convention and the Clinton coup

I finally found something that liberal Nevada Appeal columnist Kirk Caraway and I can agree on. As my friend Kirk intimated last Sunday, Team Clinton - Bill, Hillary and many of their most fervent admirers - is doing its level best to sabotage their party's presidential nominee, Barack Obama, at the Democratic National Convention, which begins tomorrow in Denver.

Carolyn and Maizie: No complaining if you didn't vote

Ahhh, we see that the prisoners are upset because their typewriters have been taken away. Could that possibly be translated into "Don't Go There In The First Place?" Then, you can have all the typewriters you want. Speaking of prisons ... if they close down the "East 5th Street Hotel," maybe we can go out and see the dinosaur tracks in the courtyard, lobby, foyer, wherever they are. Real "old" Nevada history.

Carson landfill too expensive for Lyon residents

Chuck Muth: The tax man cometh, wearing Republican clothes

To the best of my recollection, Gov. Jim Gibbons only violated his Taxpayer Protection Pledge once in the 2007 legislative session " and now it's coming back to bite the citizens of Washoe County. Just like having a roll in the hay just one time, just one time can have catastrophic, long-term consequences.

My husband, John, is very ill and we have been fighting with Social Security for a year now. They sent us letters to say he is approved for medical and non medical but he doesn't get it due to Workers Compensation, which he got in 2003 in a lump sum, so he has not been getting any money.

Cutting taxes and regulations is the best solution

Ms. Macquarie (Fresh Ideas column, July 30), earth has the same amount of water today as the day God created it. Now there are many ways to increase our energy supplies including shale, coal, oil, nuclear, wind, solar and bio fuels. Yes it takes lots of water but don't you think the American people are smart enough to develop the technology to get the water and recycle it?

Debunking some common driving myths

I have always been amazed that people who have, supposedly, read the driver's handbook, taken and passed a written and driving exam, and been issued a license to operate a motor vehicle are still, nevertheless, inclined to believe the "Common Myths." Olympics should be a vacation from politics

Fresh ideas: So that's why politicians act the way they do ...

In 1914, the U.S. Historian Daniel Boorstin observed, "As individuals and as a nation, we now suffer from social narcissism. The beloved Echo of our ancestors, the virgin America, has been abandoned. We have fallen in love with our own image, with images of our making, which turn out to be images of ourselves." The foreboding of this quote has come to pass as more and more leaders, heroes and companies in our country reek of narcissism.

Guy W. Farmer: Immigration raids have had a positive impact on the problem

Remember the outrage among illegal immigration advocates when the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agency raided several McDonald's outlets in Northern Nevada last fall? Perhaps it's time to take another look at the final outcome of those much-criticized raids now that the local McDonald's franchise owner has been fined $1 million for knowingly hiring "undocumented" (illegal) workers.

Understands why her father loved Northern Nevada

Where do you cut when you've already cut so much?

It's a scenario that is not hard for many families to imagine: You've cut your budget several times to adjust for these difficult economic times, but you still can't seem to make ends meet (even though you're spending less than your neighbors). You've already cut out some of what in better times would have been considered basic family activities but which now seem like luxuries ... things like movies, eating out, lessons for the children.

Seniors can return Douglas County to prosperity

Chuck Muth: Do you, Mr. Candidate, take Miss Taxpayer ...?

If you believe Nevada's government is bigger than it should be and don't want your taxes raised, you should ask any and all legislative candidates who ask for your vote to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge promising to oppose and vote against any and all efforts to raise taxes. Period. Because if they won't sign it, there's a very good chance they'll vote to raise taxes next year.

Financial collapse of banks not indicative of overall industry

The collapse of IndyMac Bank and more recently First National Bank of Nevada has lead to speculation about which other banks are most at risk. For many years, I had few concerns about the solvency of our banking system. Banks were profitable and their balance sheets looked good. Now there is a crisis of confidence again in the credit markets.

Suicide rate in Nevada now at a critical level

Preventing suicide is a cause that has special meaning to me. In 1972, I lost my father to suicide, and I didn't talk about it for many years. It wasn't until 25 years later in a Senate Aging Committee hearing that I discussed it publicly. Since that day, I have openly spoken of my father's death to draw attention to the need for larger suicide prevention efforts. We've had some success in our work, but clearly not enough.

Another suggestion for president

Bob Thomas: No matter what foreigners think, we should stay in Iraq

It isn't often that I disagree with my friend and ex-colleague, Guy Farmer, but in my opinion his Nevada Appeal column of July 20, 2008 calls for a rebuttal.

Guy W. Farmer: McCain needs to energize his campaign before it's too late

Despite a couple of obvious missteps, Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama burnished his foreign policy credentials during his recent whirlwind trip to Europe and the Middle East. He attracted big crowds and fawning media coverage and looked young and vigorous while his Republican opponent, John McCain, looked old and tired. Nevertheless, Obama and McCain are still locked in a tight race for the presidency.
