Expo events include golf, railroad show

Railway Reflections International Art Expo events coming up include a golf tournament and luau, model railroad show and sale, film festival and wine train.

The golf tournament and luau will be at Eagle Valley Golf Club, 3999 Centennial Park Drive, Carson City. A four-man scramble with registration from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., shotgun start at 1 p.m. Includes lunch, raffle, silent auction, putting contest, tee and golf prizes. From Sunday to Aug. 17, model railroaders can see all kinds of trains in miniature on action-packed layouts, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. daily at the Nevada State Library and Archives Gallery, 100 North Stewart St., Carson City.

The movie "Carson City" will be shown at 6 p.m. Thursday at Piper's Opera House, 12 North B St. in Virginia City. Cost is $5.

The Garden Train Wine and Cheese Tour will be on Aug. 15 at Mills Park, Highway 50 East at Saliman Street, Carson City from 5-8 p.m. Call 885-6833 for prices.

"Eastern Fare meets Western Trains" will be a fine Chinese dinner at the Nevada State Railroad Museum, 2180 South Carson St., Carson City from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Tickets are $25.

Carson-Virginia City Railfest set

Ride the newly restored section of the Virginia & Truckee Railway during the Virginia City-Carson City Railfest Aug. 16-17.

The event kicks off Aug. 16 at the V&T Station on F Street in Virginia City when Engine No. 29, a 1916 steam engine, will pull riders on a five-mile, 35-minute trip on the historic V&T to Gold Hill, an old-time mining town, from 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

At sunset, the V&T wine train, hosted by the Virginia City Ramada Inn, takes visitors on a narrated train ride to American Flat, a new section of track completed by the commission. The ride includes hors d'oeuvres, wine and music.

The train departs from the F Street Station at 7 p.m. and returns at 8:30 p.m.

On Aug. 17, Railfest moves to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City. At 10 a.m. the old No. 8 locomotive does a "Steam Up" around the museum tracks. Enjoy rides on an authentic steam train from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors 65 and older, and $3 for children ages 6-11.

The museum will host "Eastern Fare Meets Western Trains," a dinner and lecture from 5:30-8:30 p.m., as part of Railway Reflections, a major international railroad art exposition.

Carson City's Bamboo Gardens will serve appetizers and entrees in the museum, followed by a slideshow presentation of the Chinese contribution to the V&T.

Dayton

Vendors sought for Dayton Valley Days

The 20th annual Dayton Valley Days will be Sept. 20-21 and will honor the buildings of yesterday with the theme, "Old Places, New Faces." The Dayton Station historical railroad depot will be included, along with the other buildings from the community's past.

Money raised goes to the continued restoration of historic Old Town Dayton and aiding organizations that provide Christmas gifts to those in need, provide prevention and intervention, scholarships and provide support to other needs of the community.

Parade applications for Dayton Valley Days available

Applications for the annual Dayton Valley Days Parade are available.

The parade is open to floats, cars, trucks, motorcycles, antique tractors, marching groups, horse-drawn cart, mounted horses, rescue and fire equipment and other entries appropriate for an old-fashioned parade.

The theme for this year's Dayton Valley Days honors Old Town Dayton businesses: "New Faces in Old Places."

Trophies will be awarded for the best entry in each category.

Entry fees are clubs and organizations $5 per entry or unit, businesses $15 and political parties $25.

The parade is set for 10 a.m. on Sept. 20. It will travel down Main Street to Pike Street, terminating at Terrible's Casino.

Carnival, concert part of fundraiser

A carnival, outdoor concert, vendors and a barbecue will raise money to fight cancer at the Weekend Extravaganza fundraiser, 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Dayton Valley Golf and Country Club, 101 Palmer Drive, Dayton.

Proceeds will benefit Carson Advocates for Cancer Care. Vendor booths are available but space is limited.

A carnival by American Traveling Shows Inc. will be set up, greens fees are $50 and David John and the Comstock Cowboys will perform from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Visitors should bring lawn chairs, but no coolers, and meet at the driving range.

There will be horse-drawn carriage rides and pony rides by Hoofbeats.

Cost is $45 per person or $80 for two, which includes the concert, meal, raffle drawings and a chance at silent auction prizes.

Kids 10 and younger attend the concert for free, with their meals costing $5.

Fallon

Concert in the park planned

The City of Fallon, in cooperation with the Churchill Arts Council, will present a free in-the-park concert 7:30 p.m. Aug. 22 with Dave Alvin and The Guilty Men in Oats Park, directly in front of the Oats Park Art Center.

Visitors should bring a picnic supper for an evening of music under the stars. CAC's Art Bar, in the Oats Park Art Center, will be open following the performance. Call CAC at 423-1440.

Virginia City

Vendors, sponsors, performers sought for Camel Races

The 49th annual Virginia City International Camel Races will be Sept. 5-7, and organizers are looking for vendors and sponsors.

The annual event is one of Virginia City's largest, bringing thousands of people to the Comstock each year.

Also, entertainment groups are sought to provide performances between races.

Art exhibit at the history center

The "Dusty Roads Artists' Trail" comes home to the Comstock for an exhibit at the Comstock History Center, 20 North E St., Virginia City.

It will be on display until July 20. In August 2007, six Nevada visual artists were selected to spend a week creating at the historic St. Mary's Art Center in Virginia City.

The Comstock History Center is now hosting an exhibition of their work the "Dusty Roads Artists' Trail."

Featured artists include Sidne Teske, Francheskaa Clark, Carol Brown, Erik Holland, Julie La Croix, and Karen Kreyeski. The culmination of their hard work became a 26-piece exhibit that will travel throughout Nevada.

Comstock plans pet parade Aug. 23

The 3rd annual Virginia City Pet Parade will be Aug. 23 in Virginia City. Registration beginning at 10 a.m. at the Visitors Center, 86 S. C St.

The line-up will be at 11:30 a.m. and the parade starts noon. The entry fee is by donation.

Categories include: Most Unusual Pet, Cutest Child-Pet Combo, Cutest Adult-Pet Combo, Most Creative Costume, Most Humorous Pet, Best Performance, Best Dressed Pet, Pet Owner Look-a-Like, Yappiest Pet.

The last movie in the Railways Reflections Film Festival takes place at 6 p.m. on Thursday with "Carson City."

Dinner mystery theater held over

"Death of a Doornail," the dinner mystery theater production at Piper's Opera House has been held over for two more weeks.

Cheerleaders to host car wash, pool party

The Virginia City High School Cheerleaders will hold a car wash and bake sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Virginia City Fire Station on North C Street.

The cheerleaders will also host a pool party and barbecue from 6 to 10 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Virginia City Pool, East Carson Street, Virginia City, next to Miner's Park.
