The Western Nevada College baseball team belted four home runs on its way to an 18-5 win over the Las Vegas Metro Stars, a team consisting of top high school players from Southern Nevada, in a scrimmage Sunday at John L. Harvey Field.
Brian Barnett, Brett Moravec, C.J. Maldonado and Mike Long all homered as the Wildcats pounded out 19 hits. Barnett and Moravec each had four hits. Moravec hit a two-run homer and in addition to his solo shot, Barnett added an RBI double. Long had two hits " a three-run inside-the-park home run and a two-run double.
Javy Perez, Logan Odom and Rusty Devitt all combined to no-hit the Metro Stars over the first five innings. Perez retired all six batters he faced, striking out one. Odom struck out the side in the third and Devitt struck out five over two innings.
WNC scored nine runs in the fifth inning to take an 18-0 lead. Barnett had an RBI double and an RBI single, Long hit his two-run double, Moravec and Daniel Zylstra each hit an RBI single and Maldonado belted a three-run homer during the rally.
In the sixth, Cavin Hill allowed three runs, two earned, on three hits while striking out one for WNC. R.J. Cash hit a two-run homer for the Metro Stars in the sixth.
David Carroll allowed one run on no hits while striking out two through two innings for the Wildcats. Carroll allowed a run in the eighth after a walk, hit batsman, wild pitch and an RBI groundout. Jeremy Gendlek finished up for WNC, allowing one run on two hits in the ninth.
Also for the Wildcats, Marshall Kennebrew, Maldonado and Zylstra all had two hits, Brett Wellman and Mike Stiles each tripled and Andrew Garcia added a hit. WNC will next play the Reno Astros at 7 p.m. Friday at Moana Stadium.
