LAS VEGAS (AP) " Nevada's main electric utility is asking state regulators to let it raise rates 17.5 percent for a typical southern Nevada customer beginning next Sept. 1.
NV Energy Inc. announced Monday in Las Vegas that it filed a required rate statement with the Public Utilities Commission.
It says it includes costs for a power plant it bought near Primm, an addition it completed last summer at another plant in Las Vegas, and one it's expanding north of the city.
The company says the overall rate increase is about 15 percent.
But a typical residential customer would see bills go from about $150 a month to just under $176.
NV Energy owns Las Vegas-based Nevada Power Co. and Reno-based Sierra Pacific Power Co.
Chief executive Michael Yackira says the company wants the PUC to postpone implementation from July 1 to Sept. 1, to avoid pushing bills up during summer when electricity use is highest.
