Players at Dayton earn PGA cards
Two of the six players who made it to the Q-school finals after advancing from the first stage qualifier at Dayton Valley Golf & Country Club were among the 28 golfers to earn a PGA Tour card for 2009.
Gary Woodland, Berryton, Kan., finished in a seven-way tie for 11th with a 20-under par total of 412 in the Q-school finals in La Quinta, Calif. Woodland advanced from the first stage Dayton Valley qualifier in both 2007 and this year.
Perhaps the most dramatic finish and story of the finals was Wil Collins, Rapid City, S.D. Collins drained a 18-foot putt for par on the 18th hole at the Stadium Course at PGA West to finish in an 11-way tie for 18th place and the final qualifying position at 19-under par 413. Collins had to rally in the final two rounds to earn his card and finished just strong enough shooting 12-under for the final 36-holes of the grueling 108-hole finals played at both the Stadium Course and Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West.
Collins played in seven consecutive Stage One Qualifying tournaments at Dayton Valley from 2002 through this year. This was his first trip to the final stage.
Other players who advanced from Dayton this year and played in the final stage were Seung-su Han, Irvine, Calif, Erick Justesen, Sacramento, Calif., Troy Merritt, Eagle, Idaho; and James Drew, North Las Vegas. Han earned fully exempt membership and the other three players earned conditionally exempt status on the 2009 Nationwide Tour.
Former Reno-Tahoe Open champions Notah Begay and Chris Riley regained their PGA Tour cards by finishing among the low 25 and ties.
