Lyon County

Christmas help available for children

Lyon County Human Services has a Christmas program going to aid struggling families so that children don't go without gifts.

Parents or guardians can fill out an application to qualify for help from a program provided by the Silver Springs Task Force and Soul'd Out Ministries.

Parents can sign up for services at either Human Services in Silver Springs or the Stagecoach General Improvement Department. The application deadline is Dec. 12. For more information call 577-0904.

GED classes set

The Lyon County School District Adult Education program will provide classes for adults taking the GED test.

The Silver Springs GED Prep Center offers free, individually paced GED prep classes in both the day and evening with an open-entry and open-exit format. The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Mondays and Wednesdays and 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Dayton

Food collected at basketball games

Dayton High School sponsors a food drive during home basketball games to re-supply Dayton's Food Bank for the holidays.

Admission is five non-perishable food items or $5 for adults; for students $3 or 3 non-perishable food items.

No need to stay for the game. There is a curb side drop off by the main gym 4:30-6:30 p.m.

Home game dates are Tuesday, Dec. 16, Wednesday, Dec. 17 and Friday, Dec. 19. The high school is located at 335 Dayton Valley Road. For information, call 246-6240.

Holiday of Lights event at golf course

Dayton Valley Golf and Country Club hosts the second annual Legado Holiday Festival of Light, 4-9 p.m., Dec. 20, 101 Palmer Drive, Dayton.

Holiday hay rides and caroling, kid's crafts and activities, goodies and treats, have your picture taken with Santa. Dayton High School Jazz Band will perform 5 p.m. and at 6 p.m. the CVC Dayton Christmas Choir will perform.

Boy Scouts tree lot open in Dayton

Troop 100 Christmas Tree lot is now open on Highway 50 East just east of Dayton Valley Road.

Hours are Monday through Thursday 3-6 p.m., Friday 3-7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday noon to 7. Prices are from $15-$60.

Gold Hill

Christmas play at the Gold Hill Hotel

The Gold Hill Theater Troupe will perform "The Toys Take Over Christmas," written and directed by Patricia Clapp and directed by Jan Parsons.

The play will be performed Wednesdays through Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m., and can include dinner.

The cost is $10 for both adults and children for the play only; for dinner and show the cost is $13 for adults and $8 for kids up to eighth grade. Call 847-0111.

'Christmas Calamity' at Gold Hill

Paul Sweetwood and Jo Kilmer have gotten together for a new play, "A Christmas Calamity," to be performed by the Gold Hill Theater Troupe at 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Dec. 16.

This original play focuses on fictional Gold Hill Hotel owner Edgar and his wife Helen, along with resident ghosts, who are not happy, so Edgar puts the hotel up for sale.

A buffet dinner is offered with the show from 5 to 7:30 p.m., with the show beginning at 8 p.m. Cost is $28 for dinner and show; $10 for show only.

Silver City

Community dinner scheduled

Friday evening Soup Dinner Gatherings will take place at the Silver City Schoolhouse at 6 p.m. Dec. 19.

The Silver City Task Force is providing the soup base and meats, and residents are encouraged to bring other soup ingredients like vegetables, herbs and spices.

Community members can participate in the soup and homemade bread preparation before settling in to watch a film or browse the library collection. If you have film suggestions call Quest Lakes at 287-7598.

Silver Springs

Library to hold open house Dec. 17

The Silver Stage Library and Silver Stage Friends of the Library will host their annual Holiday Open House from 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 17.

Christmas-themed baskets to be raffled off as prizes, will include chocolate-item themes, gift baskets for toddlers, youth and adults. The community and businesses are asked to donate items to the baskets such as DVDs, books or other holiday-themed items. Call 577-5015.

Library hosting food for fines program

Silver Stage Library patrons with books or other library items overdue can participate in the Food for Fines program by bringing a can of food to the library at 3905 Highway 50.

Patrons who bring in a non-perishable food item can clear their fines.

The food drive runs through December. All food collected will be distributed to the local food bank. Call 577-5015.

Stagecoach

Ham radio tests Saturday morning

The next testing session for Amateur Radio Licenses will be Saturday.

Registration is 8-10 a.m., at 8755 Cimarron Trail, Stagecoach. Bring photo identification, original license and photocopy. There are no photocopy machines available at this site. Exam fee is $14. For information and to pre-register, call 577-9456.

Virginia City

'The Sunshine Boys' to be performed

The Gold Hill Theater Troupe will perform Neil Simon's "The Sunshine Boys," in a dinner show starring and directed by Richard J. McGregor, at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at Piper's Opera House, 12 North B St., Virginia City.

The play is about a couple of vaudeville actors in New York who reunite for a special broadcast performance.
