It's almost Christmas break and the children and grandchildren will be around. The universal dilemma for those of us with children: How will I entertain them while waiting for the snow to fall?

My favorite stay-at-home holiday activity with my family is baking cookies, but there are a few local children's events that will get you out of the house, and some won't even break the bank.

Get into the holiday spirit with children of any age and build your own gingerbread house with candy, frosting and all the trimmings. Once you try it, this fun activity is sure to become a holiday tradition.

The Brewery Arts Center is bringing a winter musical that the entire family will enjoy. Lake Tahoe Entertainment's "Joyful Noise" includes traditional and novelty holiday pieces. What better way to get into the holiday magic than beautiful music?

The Gold Hill Theater Troupe performs a seasonal children's favorite, "Toys Take Over Christmas," following the adventures of Sunny, a cheerful rag doll brought to life by the Toymaker, whose shop is filled with living toys.

Professional ski instructor Bee Ferrato and her staff at Diamond Peak Child Ski Center make skiing a fun and exciting learning experience. If you missed the final sign-ups at the Carson City Community Center last Saturday, you can still call and see if there is room for your child at Diamond Pete's Kids for the 2009 season.

Everyone in this program is extremely friendly, caring and professional.

Remember there is also a Carson City Junior Ski/Snowboard program older siblings can sign up for.
