Carson wrestling captures seventh in Green and Gold Tournament

The Carson High School wrestling team had a solid showing at the Green and Gold Tournament on Saturday at San Marin High in Nevado, Calif.

Carson finished seventh out of 27 teams in the event that featured some of Northern California's top squads. Sonoma Calif., won the event.

"We were hoping to get a top five finish," Carson coach Tim McCarthy said. "It was a little tougher than we expected. To get seventh, we were pleased."

The Senators were led by Pat Craugh (3-1) at 103 pounds as he took second. In the finals, Craugh trailed by a huge margin, but closed to within 10-9 before his opponent scored on a reversal to hang on for a 12-9 win.

"Pat wrestled great in the finals," McCarthy said. "He had the kid on his back for quite a while. He wrestled awesome."

Also for Carson, Ricardo Ugarte came back after losing his first match to win four straight contests to take sixth at 119. Adam Welch went 3-2 to take fifth at 130, Bryce Landolt went 4-1 to take third at 135 and Junior Valladarez went 4-1 to take third at 171.

"Probably the toughest weight group there," said McCarthy about the 171 class. "He wrestled real well."

McCarthy said the finish of Valladarez was particularly impressive since he's working his way down to 160 and was going up against wrestlers bigger than him.

In addition for Carson, Brett Allen advanced to the semifinals before he withdrew due to an abdominal strain as a precaution.

"We decided it really wasn't worth it, not to risk it," McCarthy said.

McCarthy said Allen should be ready to go for Wednesday's Sierra League showdown at Northern 4A power Damonte Ranch. But McCarthy also said it's doubtful that top wrestler Nick Schlager will be able to go at 125 against Damonte.

Schlager missed Saturday's event with a broken finger he sustained at the Capital City Duals. McCarthy said it's hoped that Schlager will be able to wrestle in Reno's Sierra Nevada Classic, which will feature programs from across the West Coast and will be held Dec. 29 and 30.

Also on Saturday for Carson, Justin Barlow went 2-2 to take seventh at 215, Max Schadeck went 2-2 to place fourth at heavyweight and Ryan Hoskins went 2-2 as well at 189.

Four Carson junior varsity wrestlers, Collin Grischott at 171 pounds, Will Flores at 215, Ty Welch at 119 and Tyler Pembrook at 103, won titles at the McQueen Tournament on Saturday. Also for Carson, Pedro Fuentes (112) took second and Logan Dargert (119) and Jimmy Weir (152) both were fourth.
