Brandi Vega - "Clearly a dynamic player that becomes a threat every time she receives the ball," said Carson coach Randy Roser about the Sierra League Offensive Player of the Year. Any way you look at it, Vega is the state's all-time career scoring leader. Vega will sign to play with Washington State in February.
Carson only credited her with 59 goals as it didn't officially count goals scored from the Galena Tournament or the tournament that it attended in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, in 2007. When those tournaments are included, Vega finished with 77 goals. Vega is also the state's all-time career leader in assists.
Brenda Luquin, Carson: "She is the player that if we have an attack she had something to do with it," Roser said. "Definitely a smart player." Luquin was an all-league first team choice.
Melanie Neff, Galena: An all-league first team choice, Neff had 14 goals and 13 assists.
Sara Lancaster, Galena: An all-league first team selection, Lancaster had 13 goals and seven assists.
Katie Shrake, Galena: The team's most valuable player, Shrake was Galena's stopper and played every minute of every game. An all-league first-team performer. "Absolutely rock solid," Galena coach Ron Jones said.
Addie Shaffer, Truckee: The senior midfielder and team captain earned the highest honors, both All-League and All-State Most Valuable Player, while helping lead the Wolverines to back-to-back state championships. Also a team captain as a junior, she tallied 15 goals and 10 assists her senior season.
Katie Dill, Truckee: The senior forward and co-captain was a key piece of Truckee's back-to-back state championship runs, seemingly always in the right place at the right time to bury the ball into the back of the net. She was voted to the All-League and All-State first team, scoring 25 goals and notching nine assists.
Stephanie O'Neil, Truckee: The junior was voted to the All-League and All-State first team for her solid play at midfield. Like Dill, O'Neil was always a threat to score, featuring skilled footwork and a high soccer IQ. O'Neil, a three-year varsity starter, led the Wolverines with 25 goals and 19 assists this past season.
Sage Clark, North Tahoe: The senior co-captain was the Lakers' biggest scoring threat and one of their most skilled players. For her efforts she was voted by coaches to the All-League first team at forward and the All-State second team. Clark led her team by example.
Kea Jolicoeur, North Tahoe: What a goalkeeper. That's the impression Jolicoeur left on opposing coaches, who voted her to the All-League first team and All-State second team. Jolicoeur was a blocking machine, making diving stops left and right to thwart shot attempts and keep her team in close games.
Jenna Burnside, North Tahoe: The senior forward was priceless for her natural leadership ability and skill. Burnside showed an uncanny ability to control the flow of a game, calming teammates when things got bad and attacking with authority when the times called for it. She was voted by coaches to the All-League first team for her solid play and leadership.
Ally Freitas, Douglas: The Sierra League midfielder of the year finished the year with 29 goals and eight assists and finished her career with 55 goals.
Tia Lyons, Douglas: The first-team all-leaguer had 24 goals and six assists.
Katie Dry, Douglas: The midfielder was a first-team all-leaguer and had nine goals and seven assists
Dany Heidt, Douglas: The midfielder was a first-team all-leaguer and had three goals and 10 assists.
Alex Laing, Douglas: The midfielder had seven goals and 10 assists.
Mackenzie Cauley, Douglas: Cauley was the Tigers' top defensive player and was named to the all-league second team.
Chloe Breider, Incline: Brieder made the all-state 3A first team and was the Northern 3A's Defensive player of the Year. 1st team all-state 3A, defensive player of the year in Northern 3A.
Brittany Barcellos, South Tahoe: The defender was a an all-Sierra League first team choice.
Kelsi Buts, South Tahoe: The Sierra League Defensive Player of the Year anchored a defense that posted eight shutouts and allowed a Northern 4A low 12 goals.
Alexis Nunes-Fenley, South Tahoe: The goalie was an all-league first team pick and anchored the league's top-rated defense.
Carly Martin, Fallon: Martin had eight goals and eight assists in being named to the all-Sierra League second team.
Kate Pinder, Fallon: Pinder was rock solid in the goal with 233 saves out of 262 shots. She allowed 25 shots, two of them coming on penalty kicks, on the season and was named to the all-league second team.
Honorable mention: Carly Marsh, Galena; Jennifer Johnson, Carson; Taylor Musselman, Carson; Miriah Tompkins, Carson; Samantha Fishburn, Carson; Chelsea Bolton, Incline.
BOYS
Adam Updagrove, Carson: Updegrove had 19 goals and six assists in being named the Sierra League's offensive Player of the Year.
John Nuthall, Carson: He had nine goals and six assists in being named to the all-Sierra League first team.
Brian Duran, Carson: He played a key role in Carson posting 18 shutouts this season. He was also the leader of a defense that allowed just six goals on the season and also played a key role in heling goalie Brandon Briggs set a state record for most career shutouts. He added two assists and was an all-league first team choice.
Brandon Briggs, Carson: The Carson goalie set the state record for most career shutouts with 34. He posted 14 shutouts on the season and allowed just three goals all year. He was an all-league first team selection.
Max Brixey, Truckee: The three-year varsity starter was a monster on offense his junior and senior years, helping lead the Wolverines to back-to-back 3A state championships with his dominant midfield play. Brixey, who led Truckee with 32 goals and 28 assists, was voted All-League and All-State Most Valuable Player.
Ryan Newland, Truckee: The four-year varsity starter at goalkeeper has been instrumental to the Wolverines' success in his tenure. The co-captain recorded 15 shutouts in 26 games his senior year, holding opponents to about a half-goal per game. For his efforts he was voted All-League and All-State Defensive Player of the Year.
Raul Cardenas, Truckee: The future is bright for this sophomore, who has started the past two years for the defending state champs. With deft footwork and keen soccer instincts ever on display, Cardenas was voted All-League and All-State first team at midfield. He posted 17 goals and 12 assists.
Edgar Arceo, Douglas: The first team all-league performer had 16 goals and four assists on the season and finished his career with 39 goals.
Ross Gardner, Douglas: The first-team all-leaguer led the Tigers' defense and added seven goals and 10 assists.
Seth Chatterly, Galena: He was an all-league first team choice who led Galena's attack and helped the Grizzlies finish as the NIAA 4A State runners-up.
Braeden De Long, Galena: De Long was the Sierra League's Midfielder of the Year.
Max Dugan, Galena: Dugan led Galena's rock solid defense, which allowed just six goals all season, heading into the NIAA 4A State Championship Game. He was an all-league first team choice.
Alfredo Gonzalez, Fallon: Gonzalez was an all-league second team choice.
Omar Navarro, South Tahoe: Navarro was an all-league first team selection.
Ruben Camacho, Incline: He was a 3A all-state first team choice and the Northern 3A's Offensive Player of the Year.
Michael Ceragioli, Incline: The midfielder was an all-state first team selection.
Johnny Luna, Incline: The defender made the all-state first team as a utility player.
