ELKO " Elko Fire Department's Engine 12 has found a new home in South America.

The Elko firefighter's union purchased the aging truck at public auction for $1,000, and had it transported to Banos del Inca, Peru.

Former deputy chief Dan Landa says the truck was shipped to Houston, then taken by boat to Lima, Peru. Members of the Banos del Inca fire department picked it up there and drove it 12 hours to their station.

Landa and retired firefighter Eddie Vasquez provided training.

On the first day, it was put into service on an injury accident involving an overturned milk truck.

After three days of training, officials say the department was able to use the new equipment on its own " they took it to an elementary school to show to students.
