Ethel Rumsey Hylton, age 97, long time Carson City resident, passed away here Nov. 25, 2008. She was born on a farm in Council Grove, Kan. to Thomas and Elsie Kendle Rumsey. Ethel was close to her five brothers and sister, especially after the loss of their mother in 1916. She worked for the Morris County Farm Bureau and later for the City of Long Beach, Calif. She met the love of her life, Wayne Hylton in 1927, and they eloped to Abilene, Kan. New Years Eve, 1934. Ethel enjoyed music, inspirational readings, traveling, sports, serving on election boards, playing bridge, writing poetry, and was a superb correspondent. She was a generous and caring friend, had the most beautiful smile, was humorous, patriotic, and proud of her Midwestern heritage. Most of all she was the heart of her family and led a Christian life by example.
Surviving are daughter Janet Shepard and husband Dick, son Jerry Hylton and wife Maxane, grandchildren Jim Shepard and wife Kassie, Jeff Hylton and wife Kelly, Jan Pollema and husband Cy, Jay Hylton and wife Tammi, Ryan Bohling and wife Kim, Kara Lake and husband Kevin, and great-grandchildren Katlynn, Hayley, Jordan, Ashtyn, Jacob, Hunter, Jaidyn, Kendall, Calvin, Kaden, Ty and Brody. Also surviving are brothers Allen Rumsey Boyce and Thomas Rumsey, many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
Ethel was grateful for her special caregivers: Dr. Chris Forman, Nurse Mary, Barbara, and the staff at Eagle Valley Care Center. Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, brothers Lauren, Lester, Ellis, and sister Blanche. She now has the pleasure of greeting many wonderful folks on her heavenly journey, and they will all be glad to see her.
Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Lone Mountain Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Ethel's life at 2 p.m. at Carson City First United Methodist Church.
