Just hearing that snow might be falling lifted the spirits of Dave Goodwin, co-owner of the Sporting Rage in Carson City.
"But it was real nice to see it this morning," he said.
Two to four inches fell in the valley Monday and up to two feet in the mountains. For businesses here and in Lake Tahoe, Goodwin said, it's white gold.
"Hopefully it's going to boost the economy here," he said. "As much as I'm a skier at heart and I love skiing, most important is our economy. This gives us a chance at survival for our business."
But the snow was not a welcome relief for everyone.
Chains or snow tires were required on Sierra highways, including Interstate 80 and Highway 50.
Travel restrictions also were posted for Highway 395 through Washoe Valley.
State Route 342 into Virginia City was closed for about three hours after a snow plow overturned.
The truck route remained open.
According to Nevada Department of Transportation spokesman Scott Magruder, the driver received only minor injuries.
"It's very rare that we have a snow plow go down," Magruder said. "We hate to lose any of our equipment, but we have other plows that can be called into use. The good news is we have no major injuries."
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
Other than the rollover, Magruder said, snow removal in the area went well.
He cautioned motorists to drive slowly and cautiously.
Scattered snow showers are expected to continue today with a slight chance of snow on Wednesday, according to Rudy Cruz, a weather services specialist with the National Weather Service in Reno.
He said there is a chance of snow Thursday night and into the weekend.
"People who are traveling should stay tuned to the forecast," Cruz advised.
The highs this week will range from 25-30 degrees, he said, with lows ranging from 1-15 degrees.
"That's when people need to keep an eye on their pipes and stuff," he said.
