A Carson City father arrested for allegedly driving a vehicle that was not registered or insured, had an additional charge added to his booking sheet Monday after he admitted at the jail that he'd left his sick 1-year-old child home alone.
Ramiro Fernandez-Murillo, 22, a laborer, is being held in the Carson City Jail on suspicion of gross misdemeanor child endangerment, misdemeanor driving on a suspended license, driving without insurance, failing to update his driver's license after moving to the area and two traffic warrants.
According to Deputy Sal Acosta, Fernandez-Murillo was north on Airport Road about 1:40 p.m. when Acosta spotted the expired license plates.
When the vehicle was stopped, Fernandez-Murillo allegedly admitted he did not have insurance. Acosta also found that he had the traffic warrants.
At the jail, Acosta allowed Fernandez-Murillo to call his girlfriend on speaker phone.
Acosta said he then overheard the father tell his girlfriend to go home because he'd left the couple's 1-year-old daughter alone at their Woodside Drive apartment while he ran to 7-Eleven to put air in his truck tires.
"He didn't want to take the child out of the house because she was sick," said Acosta. "He said he didn't know it was wrong."
When deputies reached the apartment, a friend of the family had already arrived to care for the child, according to Acosta.
He said a copy report will be sent to Child Protective Services.
