FALLON " It was a long night in the Lahontan Valley for the Douglas Tigers' basketball teams on Tuesday.
The Fallon Greenwave swept Douglas in the varsity games, winning the girls game, 47-46, and the boys game, 54-45.
The girls game went down to the final buzzer. With the score tied, 46-46 and time running out, Fallon's Sara Parsons sank the second of two free throws to win the game for the Greenwave.
Douglas held the lead throughout the first half and led 22-18 at halftime.
The Tigers extended their lead to seven at 31-24 about midway through the third period. Later, Douglas went on a 16-2 run to take a 40-33 lead early in the fourth quarter.
Douglas fought back to retake the lead at 46-44 before Fallon scored the final three points of the game.
"This was the kind of game I expected between two even teams," Douglas coach Werner Christen said, "I told the girls it might come down to the last second, and it did. We're working on consistency right now. At times we looked really good and at other times we looked lost."
Jessica Waggoner led the Tigers with 20 points and Ally Frietas scored 10. Parsons led Fallon with 18 points.
Douglas fell to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the Sierra League while Fallon improved to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Sierra League. The Tigers return to action Thursday at Galena.
GALENA 61, DAMONTE RANCH 24
The Lady Grizzlies bolted out to a 32-13 halftime lead and left the Mustangs in the rear-view mirror.
"We pretty much went full-court and they (the Mustangs) struggled," said Galena coach Karen Friel.
Galena guard Haley Jensen and forward Emily Burns each scored 14 points in helping the Grizz improve to 7-2 overall.
It was the Sierra League opener for both teams.
Boys basketball: Fallon 54, Douglas 45
In the boys game, Fallon set a torrid early pace and raced to a 33-18 halftime lead, draining four 3-pointers in the first half. Fallon started to run out of steam in the third quarter and Douglas was able to close to within 44-36 at the end of the period.
The Tigers had their chances in the fourth quarter, but their shooting went absolutely stone cold. Shot after shot missed and Douglas didn't score again until C.J. Marcotte hit a 3-pointer with just :41 to play.
Fallon's shooting was almost as cold as the Greenwave scored only two points in the first six minutes of the period. Fallon used ball control to run a lot of time off the clock.
Another 3-pointer by Marcotte and one by Austin Neddenreip pulled theTigers to within six points at 51-45, but Douglas was forced to foul and Fallon hit their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
"Fallon did a great job tonight," Douglas coach Corey Thacker said. "They shot the ball well, attacked us and put us on our heels. Compliments to them."
Nick Hales led Douglas with 12 points. Garrett Adams scored 16, Russ Smith 15 and Jake Johnston 11 for Fallon.
Douglas falls to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in the Sierra League while Fallon improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league. Douglas returns to action Dec. 26 in the Las Vegas Prep Tournament.
GALENA 60, DAMONTE RANCH 47
The rumors of Galena's demise are greatly exaggerated. The Grizzlies never trailed as they scored a win in their Sierra League opener with the Mustangs.
"This is a team (Damonte Ranch) that I noticed was scoring in the 70s and in the last four in the high 60s," said Galena coach Tom Maurer, who Grizz improved to 2-4 overall. "To hold them to 47 is outstanding. They have really, really good shooters. We matched up well and did a great job on the boards."
Senior Victor Walker had a team-high 17 points for Galena, which also got 14 from Michael Arciniega and 13 from Alex Hansen.
DAYTON 64, INCLINE 61
Chris Sikora scored 21, Dakota Lee 18 and Tannar Wood 11 as Dayton improved to 4-4 overall.
SILVER STAGE 75, WHITTELL 32
Jesse Fisher scored 18, Michael McDonald 14 and Jared Roberts 13 for Silver Stage, which won its league opener.
