Windy with blowing snow for commute

Drive carefully on surface streets, some may still have areas of snow and ice.

The Nevada Department of Transportation reports at 5:48 a.m. all routes are open with no controls with the following exceptions:

Interstate 80 " Highway closed for 77 miles between Applegate, Calif. exit 128 and .7 miles east of the Nevada state line. Chains or snowtires required for 23 miles between the Nevada state line and .5 miles west of Mustang exit 23.

Highway 50 " Snowtires or chains required for 18.2 miles between .7 miles east of the California state line at South Lake Tahoe and 3.3 miles west of US 395 at South Carson City.

Highway 395 " Snowtires or chains required for 5.4 miles between Highway 50 at William Street and East Lake Boulevard. Snowtires or chains required and high wind warning in Washoe Valley; campers and trailers prohibited for 6 miles between East Lake Boulevard and Winters Ranch. Snowtires or chains required for 4.8 miles between Winters Ranch and 1.8 miles north of Washoe Hill, South Reno.

SR 341 " Snowtires or chains required for 11.3 miles between .2 miles north of Virginia City and 1.7 miles south of US 395, bottom of Geiger Grade.

SR 431 " Snowtires or chains required for 17 miles between SR 28 and 7.5 miles south of US 395.

Some surface streets in Carson City have ice and snow. Drive carefully.

Road work continues in Carson City with areas of delays. There is continued work on Fairview Drive from South Edmonds to South Carson Street with lane closures and possible delays, as with East Fifth Street from Saliman Road to Fairview Drive.

Work on Highway 50 in east Carson City and Mound House has posted lower speed limits with narrow lanes just east of Flint Drive.

Today's weather for the Carson City area includes: A wind advisory in effect until 10 a.m., then mostly cloudy with scattered snow showers in the afternoon with snow accumulation up to 2 inches. Highs 28-38 with southwest winds 20-30 mph becoming west 15-25 mph in the afternoon with gusts up to 50 mph in the morning.

Tonight, mostly cloudy with lows 4-14 with west winds 10-15 mph with gusts up to 30 mph in the evening.

Saturday, mostly cloudy with highs 22-32 with light winds.

Sunday, cloudy with a chance of rain and snow; snow level 5500 feet with highs 29-39 with southwest winds 10-15 mph.
