The second day of the 34th annual Asics Sierra Nevada Classic was just a one-and-done for the Carson Senators.
Carson's lone wrestler, Ricardo Ugarte (119 pounds), lost in a 4-0 decision against No. 11 seeded Ricky Hernandez from Bishop Gorman.
"We didn't have to bring a school bus this morning," Carson wrestling coach Tim McCarthy joked.
Ugarte went 4-1 Monday and would have wrestled the match then, but wrestlers are limited to just five matches a day. Instead, Ugarte took on Hernandez first thing in the morning, but was done for the day within minutes.
"He almost had him turned at the end," McCarthy said. "Ricky was on top and almost had him turned. That would have tied it. He was trying so hard to turn him that it ended up getting reversed with a few seconds left to go."
Carson finished the two-day tournament in 41st place with 55.5 team points. Flathead, Mont., walked away with the title after holding the lead from the first round.
The placing, though, didn't bother McCarthy, who said the experience his wrestlers earned was worth it.
"It just gets us more mat time that's going to help when it comes down to regionals and state," McCarthy said. "(There's) a lot of pressure matches, this isn't an easy dual match or anything. It's a nails tournament."
McCarthy said he was especially happy with Justin Barlow. The 215-pound junior finished 3-2 in the tournament.
"This is basically his first year of wrestling," McCarthy said. "For him to go 3-2 at the Sierra Nevada Classic is pretty good."
Carson may have had another wrestler in the finals if Ricky McDonald would have gone to the school he is zoned for. McDonald, a former member of the Carson Bulldogs youth wrestling program, worked his way through the championship bracket for the Bishop Manogue Miners before falling to No. 1 seeded Steven Hernandez of Bishop Gorman in the fourth round.
"I pinned up to the quarterfinals then got pinned in the quarterfinals," said McDonald, who beat the eight and nine seeds to get to the quarterfinals.
