120 years ago Nevada horse raisers in the Pioche and White Pine ranges are complaining of the wild horses, particularly stallions, that are running in that region. It is said the stallions make regular raids on the ranches to run off the horses of the ranch men.

Theater had good reasons for new policy, but changes may be coming

I read with interest the article in the Nevada Appeal that outlined the new policy implemented by the Galaxy Theatre whereas all persons younger than age 18 would be required to be accompanied by an adult older than age 21 on Friday and Saturday nights.

Those calling for wider superintendent search don't represent most patrons

The Nevada Appeal reporter got it right when he inferred that the slug- fest at the Tuesday night school board meeting was filled with emotional intrigue. However, he got it wrong when he grossly misreported the facts of the proceedings. He excluded public input from those who tried to shed some reasonable light on the subject of how to hire a new school district superintendent, from within the district, or outside recruitment.

City should seek maximum return for V&T investment

The mayor turned some heads this week when he had the audacity to suggest that Carson City give even more to the V&T Railway project in return for 5 percent of the take of gross profits for the foreseeable future.

Stocks plummet 315 points Friday

NEW YORK - Stocks fell sharply Friday after a series of depressing economic and corporate reports as well as high oil prices stoked concerns about the health of the economy. The major stock indexes fell more than 2.5 percent and the Dow Jones industrials lost 315 points.

Here's some questions for the new school chief

Hiring a new Carson City school superintendent was rightly characterized this week by school board member Joe Enge as "the most important thing we do as a board." Nevertheless, after a "rambling plea" by board member John McKenna, the trustees decided to fast-track the promotion of school administrator Richard Stokes without so much as a public interview. "I would like this board to forget about anyone else," declared McKenna.

Carson City The following people were booked into the Carson City Jail. All suspects are innocent until proved guilty in court:

Letters to the editor

Regarding Mr. Enge's contention that there is something sinister about the selection process for the new superintendent of Carson City Schools; Didn't the voters of Carson City elect the current board to make precisely these kinds of decisions, i.e. to hire a new superintendent if the need arose? And what does the selection protocol for selecting a superintendent of schools in Portland, Ore. have to do with Carson City? Aren't the well educated, informed and hard working members of our school board capable of this task?

Defense Secretary Gates supports diplomacy

During my U.S. Foreign Service career I never heard a defense secretary ask for more money for the State Department in order to solve intractable world problems through diplomacy, but that's exactly what Defense Secretary Robert Gates did late last year when he urged Congress to boost State's relatively meager budget.

Pro & Con: Outside search needed for next school superintendent

The retirement of Carson City School District's superintendent raises a very important issue for our community - the selection process to choose a replacement. Community confidence that the District and Board are truly working in the best interests of students and public hinges on the selection process being open, thoughtful, fair and transparent.

There's plenty to celebrate during leap week

Hot Dog ... it's leap year, and this Friday, Feb. 29, has the extra day in it. Ssoooo, for all of you who celebrate Sadie Hawkins Day (boy, does this date us), feel free to ask out any man you choose, or lasso him for a date if the "asking" doesn't work. After all, Al Capp and "Lil Abner" made it a national holiday every four years ... and it's every gal's right to make the first move on that day. Good luck!

Pro & Con: Good internal candidate for superintendent negates need for outside search

With the hiring of the past two superintendents, the Carson City School District has first sought to fill the position from within. This happened with Mary Pierczyinski and Jim Parry before her. We have done that because we have never been certain of what would be gained by going outside the district.

Darren Mack got what he deserved

I wasn't going to write about the sordid Darren Mack murder case, but after watching a Court TV interview with his brother and his defense attorney last Monday, I can't remain silent. What's beyond Super Tuesday?

The conventional wisdom says that Democrat Hillary Clinton "won" last Tuesday's presidential primaries and caucuses, but I'm not so sure about that. Although Arizona Sen. John McCain appears to have clinched the Republican nomination, I don't think we'll know who the Democrats' candidate is until the party's national convention in Denver this summer.

I've seen the future, and it's electric

Oil is the No. 1 economic and foreign policy issue for this country. If we didn't have to import oil, an astonishing number of problems in this country would simply fade away. So finding a way to end this dependence should be the top priority for this country and the people running it.

Let's hope casino developers have a good handle on Carson City's future

Sometimes, to find the truest forecast of the long-term fortune of a city the best place to look is in the business community rather than the halls of government. The evidence of that future can be found in the form of expansion plans, hiring and lay-off trends and even community involvement. Businesses don't make such decisions haphazardly; they study the market and assess future trends.
