Evelyn Sheerin, 96 died in Carson City February 10, 2008.

Evelyn was born in Salida, Colo. on February 27, 1911. Her father was George Asher, a native of Germany, who worked for the Western Pacific Railroad Company. Her mother was Elizabeth Mahon Asher, a native of Ireland.

The family moved to Elko, Nevada where she was raised. She attended Dominican College in San Rafael, California, and majored in education. She returned to Elko and taught the third grade. She met and married Chris H. Sheerin in 1936. He worked at the Elko Daily Free Press and became editor and co-publisher. Evelyn raised her stepson John Sheerin, a graduate of MIT in electrical engineering. John died in 1988. She also raised her son Gary Sheerin, a graduate of Loyola University in electrical engineering and a graduate of Hasting College of the Law. Gary practiced law in Carson City for 40 years and served in the Nevada Senate and Assembly.

Due to her teaching background she encouraged her sons to pursue higher education. Evelyn was a stay at home mom but had many exciting trips and experiences with her husband, Chris. They traveled all over the world and his newspaper background led them to kings and queens and heads of state in many countries. Evelyn lived in Carson City for 8 years but Elko was always her home. She was an avid golfer and carded two holes in one on the old Ruby View Golf Course. She was a good cook and entertainer. Her friends came from all walks of life and nationalities.

She is survived by her son, Gary and her daughter in law JoAnn, six grandchildren-Christy Sheerin Daze, Christopher Hartman Sheerin, Jennifer Sheerin Witous, Howard Hartman Sheerin and Kelleia Ann Sheerin; six great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Daze, William Murphey Sheerin, John Murphey Sheerin, Juliette Witous, Jersey Witous, and James Sheerin Witous.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Burns Funeral Home in Elko. Service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Elko Community College Foundation.
