LAS VEGAS " A Clark County building inspector has been removed from his job, following allegations that he approved remodeling work at a casino hotel without proper permits or review.

Rick Maddox left his position after 12 years on the job, citing a county official who declined to say whether Maddox resigned or was fired.

Maddox was supposed to have checked a complaint last year about construction defects during renovations at the Rio hotel-casino.

Officials later found he signed a four-paragraph report last February saying he inspected 37 guest rooms and found evidence that the Rio only did cosmetic remodeling only.

Investigations have since revealed problems with the work at the Rio and in another remodeling project at Harrah's Las Vegas resort on the Las Vegas Strip.

Casino giant Harrah's Entertainment Inc., which owns both properties, has said it was cooperating with the county probe, and that remediation work was being done at the two hotels.

Two hotel facilities officials at the properties face April 1 court dates on misdemeanor charges alleging they oversaw remodeling work without proper permits and inspections.
