The Western Nevada College baseball team didn't receive much of a test on Saturday, but that should change today.
WNC rolled against College of Redwoods (Calif.) in Stockton, Calif., 15-2 on Saturday. But the level of competition that the Wildcats were facing was demonstrated when Redwoods lost to Delta Commmunity College 19-0, 17-5.
So it figures to be an even matchup today when WNC (5-7) faces host Delta (8-3) at noon. "Delta's going to be a stiff test," WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said.
Twelve players pounded out 19 hits for the Wildcats against Redwoods. Brian Barnett went 4-for-5 with a double, Andrew Reid doubled twice, Travis Feiner went 2-for-3 with a double, Kevin Schlange had two hits, Kyle Gutchewsky, Marshall Kinnebrew, Logan Odom and Jerome Pena all doubled and Brett Moravec, Darren Bruhns, Chuck Howard and Davis Banks all added a hit.
Whittemore said he was pleased that his team was able to score in eight of the nine innings.
"(That) showed a consistent approach and we played good defense and we threw strikes," Whittemore said. "We played a complete game. I thought we played very well. I think we're turning a corner."
Starting pitcher Kyle Starratt allowed both runs over four innings while Matt Klein pitched three scoreless innings and Josh Creveling threw two scoreless innings. Kyle Farrell is scheduled to start today and Josh Moody and Jose Barajas are scheduled to be the first two available pitchers out of the bullpen.
