Appeal Staff Report
The Western Nevada College baseball team, weather permitting, is scheduled to play its first home series of the season earlier than expected this weekend.
WNC was scheduled to play at Feather River Community College this weekend. But because of poor field conditions at Feather River, the series has been moved to John L. Harvey Field. The two teams are scheduled to play a single game at 1 p.m. Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m.
The Wildcats (6-7) opened the season on the road with three tough series against Arizona teams before playing on the road against College of the Redwoods and San Joaquin Delta College. WNC, using aluminum bats, pounded out 38 hits and scored 32 runs while beating Redwoods 15-2 and Delta 17-4.
WNC coach D.J. Whittemore said his team continues to improve. "We're getting better and we'll continue to get better if we can practice," Whittemore said.
Due to the weather, WNC hasn't been able to practice on its field until this week. "It's really nice to see the guys swing the bats," Whittemore said.
Whittemore also said "it's a lot easier to swing aluminum" as opposed to the wood bats that WNC uses in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
