Nevada baseball remains winless, loses to Tide

Frisco, Texas - The University of Nevada baseball team dropped to 0-5 on the season after suffering a 7-4 defeat to Alabama (2-3) on Friday afternoon at the Southwest Diamond Classic at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco, Texas.

The Wolf Pack is 0-2 in the tournament and close out against the University of Texas at Arlington at 1:00 p.m. today.

The Crimson Tide jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fifth inning, courtesy of an error by Nevada's right fielder Terry Walsh in the first, a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly for a pair of runs in the third, and an RBI double and a throwing error by Pack first baseman Shaun Kort in the fifth.

Third baseman Jason Rodriguez singled in David Ciarlo to put Nevada on the board in the top of the sixth, but Alabama made it 6-1 on Alex Kubal hit his first home run of the year.

Pack starter Chris Garcia (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Alabama starter Austin Hyatt (1-0) allowed one run on six hits and struck out six in seven innings to earn his first victory of the season.

Wolf Pack reserve freshman shortstop Garrett Patterson's committed Nevada's third error in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing the Tide to score their seventh run of the game.

Ciarlo hit his first homer of the season in the top of the eighth inning off reliever Austin Evans.

Reserve freshman catcher Matt Lagenfeld's first career hit in the top of the ninth inning scored right fielder Jason Sadoian and left fielder Mike Hale to round out the scoring at 7-4.

Ciarlo went 3-for-3, leading Nevada with two runs batted in, including one off his homer.

Shortstop Josh Rutledge went 4-for-5 and scored three runs for the Tide. Kubal went 2-for-4, with two RBI and scored two runs.

Nevada stranded six runners and Alabama seven in the game.

The Tide turned three double plays while the Pack did not turn a double play and committed three errors.
